An HTTPS padlock does not change that conclusion. HTTPS encrypts the connection between the browser and the site; it does not prove that the operator is trustworthy, that the video is licensed, or that advertisements and embedded players are safe.
What can go wrong on a piracy-streaming clone
The danger is not limited to downloading a movie file. The FTC warns that illegal streaming websites, apps, and add-ons can distribute malware capable of stealing payment details, shopping credentials, banking information, photos, and other personal data.

Leave immediately if you see these signs
- A download is required before the documentary will play.
- The site demands browser notifications, remote-access software, or a phone call.
- A pop-up gives a countdown, a phone number, or instructions to disable security software.
- The page opens multiple tabs or moves to an unrelated domain.
- A “CAPTCHA” asks you to paste or run a command, install an extension, or enable notifications.
- The site asks for credentials belonging to another streaming service.
Do not click the warning, call its number, grant remote access, or keep trying different play buttons. Close the tab. If the browser is frozen, terminate it using the operating system’s task manager or force-quit controls rather than interacting with the page.

- Stop interacting with the page. Do not install a player, APK, extension, or “update.”
- Run a full security scan. Update the device’s security software first, then run a full scan, as recommended by the FTC.
- Remove notification permission. In Chrome, open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Site Settings → Notifications. Remove or block unfamiliar entries under Allowed to send notifications.
- Check extensions. In Chrome, go to More → Extensions → Manage extensions and remove anything you did not intentionally install.
- Block the site in Edge if necessary. Go to Settings and more → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All sites, select the suspicious site, and set Notifications to Block.
- Protect accounts. If you entered a password, change it through the legitimate service’s own website and enable multifactor authentication. If you entered card details, contact the card issuer promptly.
A fake antivirus alert by itself does not prove that the device is infected. Browser-based scareware can imitate operating-system warnings or arrive later as a notification. Treat it as a reason to close the page and scan the device, not as a reason to call the number shown on screen.
Safer ways to watch documentaries
Instead of searching for a 123movies mirror, identify the documentary and check legitimate availability through the filmmaker or distributor, the broadcaster that commissioned it, a licensed rental or subscription service, a public library platform, or a free ad-supported service with a clear operator.
