Wonka (2023) was filmed at real locations in England and on purpose-built sets at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Confirmed locations include Bath, Oxford, Lyme Regis, St Albans, Sutton Bridge and London. The film’s snow-covered fictional city is a designed production environment, not one real town.

Where was Wonka filmed?

The production combined location filming with extensive studio construction. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden was central: the production built more than 50 sets across three sound stages and created a bespoke town backlot. Real-world filming took place at named sites in Bath, Oxford, Lyme Regis, St Albans, on the Thames at Sutton Bridge, and at London locations. The available location information does not provide a complete scene-by-scene map.

Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden

Leavesden, in Hertfordshire, provided the principal constructed environment. Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden says the production built over 50 sets across three sound stages, including Scrubitt and Bleacher’s enterprise, a cathedral vault and Wonka’s chocolate shop. A designed backlot helped create the fictional town.

Production designer Nathan Crowley described the backlot as an opportunity to shape the town for the film: “I think it worked out well that we got to build a big backlot, because we got to make it ours.” Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden describes the sets and production design; it does not establish that the Wonka sets are open to visitors.

Bath filming locations

Bath supplied several exteriors. The Bath Film Office names Parade Gardens, Riverside Colonnades, Bath Street and Kingston Buildings. Visit Bath also identifies Bath Abbey and the Orange Grove in front of it as part of the film’s Bath settings.

  • Parade Gardens and Riverside Colonnades: The Bath Film Office says these scenes were filmed at night. Crews used cranes for overhead lighting and fans to blow artificial snow across the river.
  • Bath Street and Kingston Buildings: Both are on the Film Office’s confirmed location list.
  • Bath Abbey and the Orange Grove: Visit Bath and VisitBritain identify the Abbey area among the locations.

Bath’s streets and riverside were dressed with artificial snow. The Colonnades can be transformed to represent different settings, but the Film Office’s description of their use as a prison or factory in productions generally is not confirmation of a specific Wonka scene there. See the Bath Film Office location list and Visit Bath’s Wonka locations information.

Walcot Steps were dressed, but not used for filming

Walcot Steps are a notable near-miss: Visit Bath says they were dusted with artificial snow for a scene, but filming did not take place there. They should not be counted as a Wonka filming location.

Oxford filming locations

VisitBritain identifies the Radcliffe Camera, Catte Street and Sheldonian Theatre as filming locations. Production information also confirms the Radcliffe Camera, part of the Bodleian Library, and says another riverside location was used, but does not name that river site. It is therefore not possible to identify it confidently from the published information. See VisitBritain’s Wonka location list and Warner Bros.’ production information.

Lyme Regis: the harbour and The Cobb

In Dorset, Lyme Regis harbour stood in for the town docks and the landing place for Willy’s boat. The production information also identifies the historic harbour wall, The Cobb, as part of this setting. The available information does not provide a shot-by-shot map or a visitor itinerary.

St Albans filming locations

VisitBritain lists Verulamium Park and Abbey Mill Lane, near Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, among the locations used for Wonka. Its location information does not assign a particular scene to either site.

Sutton Bridge on the Thames

The production filmed scenes featuring Willy and his mother on their narrowboat at Sutton Bridge, on a stretch of the Thames. The production information confirms the location but does not identify precise filming points along the river.

London locations: The Rivoli Ballroom and Eltham Palace

  • The Rivoli Ballroom: The production used the south London venue as a comedy club and telephone exchange.
  • Eltham Palace: Interiors in Slugworth’s house and factory were filmed at this English Heritage property.

Both locations also appear in VisitBritain’s list of Wonka filming locations; the production details are in Warner Bros.’ production information.

Can you visit the Wonka filming locations?

Some named sites are public streets, parks or landmarks; others are interiors or working venues with their own access rules. A location appearing in the film does not mean visitors can enter the specific room or area used during production. Leavesden’s Wonka sets are constructed studio environments, and the studio information does not establish public access to those sets.

For a location-focused trip, Bath and Oxford offer clusters of named urban landmarks, while Lyme Regis, St Albans, Sutton Bridge and the London sites are separate stops. Check opening times, access and any tour details with the relevant site or operator before travelling; current Wonka-specific routes are not established by the location sources.
