What is Queer about, and who stars in it?
Set in Mexico City in 1950, the film follows William Lee, an American expatriate in his early 50s who is largely alone until he meets Eugene Allerton, a young student new to the city. Lee begins to imagine an intimate connection with him. The story combines queer romance and the search for emotional connection with its historical setting; its frank sexual content is one element of the film, not its only subject.
Daniel Craig plays Lee, and Drew Starkey plays Allerton. The principal cast also includes Lesley Manville and Jason Schwartzman, according to the Venice Biennale catalogue. Brazilian cinema listing UCI likewise describes Lee as an American expatriate who encounters Allerton amid Mexico City’s bohemian life.

Is Queer based on a book?
Yes. Guadagnino directed the 2024 film from a screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, adapted from William S. Burroughs’ novel Queer. It is an adaptation, not a literal transcription. In a TIME interview, Craig said artists must “interpret and to expand” while adhering to the source material. Kuritzkes described his role as a “medium” between Burroughs and Guadagnino.
Guadagnino framed the film’s emotional focus around whether the characters are ready for connection and what prevents them from fully connecting. Craig similarly called it “the emotional journey of these people.” Those perspectives help explain why the film is about more than its sexual explicitness.

How long is Queer?
Listings differ, and the sources do not explain why. The Venice Biennale catalogue and Brazilian cinema exhibitor UCI each list a runtime of 135 minutes. Apple TV Brazil lists 2 hours 16 minutes, while Ireland’s classification office gives 137 minutes 13 seconds. For a Brazil-focused estimate, 135 minutes is supported by both the festival catalogue and UCI; allow for variation between listings.

Ratings are jurisdiction-specific. Ireland’s Film Classification Office separately describes strong sexual content, nudity, drugs and language; that Irish guidance should not be mistaken for Brazil’s classification.
