What counts as a Japanese show?
The right service depends on the type of program you mean:
- Anime: animated series and films, including seasonal simulcasts.
- J-dramas: Japanese live-action romance, crime, workplace, historical and thriller series.
- Variety and reality: talk, game, competition and unscripted programs.
- NHK and domestic television: dramas, documentaries, news, culture and sports.
- Children’s programming, movies, stage and music content.
A show set in Japan is not necessarily produced in Japan, and an anime service is not automatically a Japanese-television service.

Best services at a glance
| Service | Best starting point for | Free or price signal | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crunchyroll | Current-season anime, subtitles, dubs and back catalog | U.S. snapshot seen August 2026: Fan $9.99/month; Mega Fan $13.99/month; seven-day trial advertised | Not a complete live-action or Japanese-TV catalog |
| HIDIVE | Selected anime exclusives, uncensored editions and additional simulcasts | U.S. snapshot seen August 2026: $7.99/month or $79.99/year; seven-day trial advertised | Smaller, specialized catalog and changing geographic availability |
| Netflix | Japanese dramas, reality shows, anime and Netflix originals | U.S. prices vary; category pages showed snapshots from $8.99/month with ads upward in August 2026 | Licensing means it is not a complete anime archive |
| Rakuten Viki | Asian dramas, selected Japanese series and multilingual subtitles | Selected titles are free with ads; Viki Pass adds ad-free HD access where available | Japanese content is only part of a broader Asian catalog |
| Jme | Japanese television, NHK-related programs, variety, documentaries and live channels | U.S./Canada snapshot seen August 2026: on-demand $14.99/month; TV plus on-demand $25.99/month, plus tax; five-day trial advertised | Higher cost and English subtitles only on selected programs |

Where to watch anime
Crunchyroll: the default anime specialist
Crunchyroll is the strongest first search for seasonal anime, a large back catalog, subtitles and selected dubs. Its Mega Fan plan supports up to four simultaneous devices and offline viewing according to the current plan information. A title can still be missing because another company holds the license, only one season is available, or the dub and subtitle versions have different rights.
Crunchyroll says a show may appear in search results yet be unavailable in your territory. Check the title inside your local app or website before subscribing: regional availability guidance.
HIDIVE: a complementary anime subscription
HIDIVE is worth adding when your list includes one of its exclusives, older catalog titles, uncensored editions or selected seasonal shows. Its advertised plan includes offline downloads and two simultaneous devices. It is poor value if every target series is already on another service.
Availability is not global. HIDIVE announced that service ended in certain areas outside North America in December 2023; confirm support for your country at HIDIVE’s regional notice.
Netflix: anime alongside general entertainment
Netflix’s Japanese-TV category includes anime such as The Apothecary Diaries, live-action series including Alice in Borderland, reality programs such as Terrace House, and Netflix originals. It is a practical household subscription when you also want international movies and series, but it does not carry every popular anime or every simulcast.
Rank #2
Where to watch Japanese live-action dramas
Netflix
Netflix is the simplest starting point for high-profile Japanese originals, contemporary romance, crime and thriller dramas, manga adaptations, and unscripted shows. Many titles have professionally localized subtitles, but the catalog and language tracks differ by country.
Rakuten Viki
Viki combines Japanese dramas with Korean, Chinese, Taiwanese and other Asian programming. Some titles are free with advertising, generally with lower video quality; Viki Pass removes ads and provides HD access where available. Community-created subtitles can support multiple languages, but completion and timing vary by title. Check the individual program’s language and territory information.
Prime Video and digital storefronts
Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and similar stores are title-by-title options. A listing may mean inclusion with Prime, an add-on channel, a rental or a purchase. Amazon announced Crunchyroll subscriptions through Prime Video Channels in October 2023; that channel is separate from ordinary Prime inclusion. Read the offer details and verify subtitles or dubs before checkout.
Where to watch Japanese television, NHK and variety
Jme
Jme is designed for viewers in the United States and Canada who want Japanese-language television rather than anime alone. Its advertised offering includes dramas, movies, variety, documentaries, children’s programs, NHK-related live and on-demand programming, and—in plans or schedules where offered—Grand Sumo and other channel content.
The service offers an on-demand plan and a TV-plus-on-demand plan. English subtitles are available for selected content, not every program. Confirm the subtitle icon and current schedule before subscribing.
Rank #3
- New release from Crunchyroll
Jme is not the same as NHK World-Japan
International NHK services do not equal access to all domestic Japanese television. Jme packages specific live channels and on-demand programs for North American customers; it should not be described as a complete NHK archive.
Free legal ways to watch
- Viki: selected programs stream free with ads and may be limited to SD quality.
- Crunchyroll Channel: a free, ad-supported linear anime channel distributed through selected U.S. partners, including Amazon Freevee, LG Channels, The Roku Channel and VIZIO WatchFree+ at launch. It is not the full on-demand Crunchyroll library; see the launch announcement.
- Tubi, Pluto TV, YouTube and similar services: use them only after confirming the specific title. VIZ notes that platform, country and dubbed/subtitled availability vary: VIZ’s streaming-partner list.
Unofficial uploads and pirate sites are not reliable legal alternatives and can expose viewers to malware, deceptive advertising or removed episodes.

How to find one specific show
- Search the exact title on the official services’ websites or apps.
- Try the Japanese title, romanized spelling, alternate English title and season number.
- Confirm that the result is the full series and correct season—not a film, recap or preview.
- Check whether English subtitles, Japanese captions or a dub are actually offered.
- Read the access label: included subscription, free with ads, add-on channel, rental or purchase.
- Verify your country, episode count and release schedule.
- If it is unavailable, check legal rental, purchase and channel options rather than assuming another country’s catalog applies.
- Recheck immediately before subscribing; licensing can change after a search result is indexed.
Choose by viewing priority
| Your priority | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Current-season anime | Crunchyroll | Anime-first service with many simulcasts |
| Anime exclusives or uncensored editions | HIDIVE | Complementary catalog |
| Anime plus live-action | Netflix | One general service covers both categories |
| Drama and multilingual subtitles | Netflix or Viki | Drama-oriented catalogs with different subtitle models |
| Variety, NHK-related programs and Japanese TV | Jme | Purpose-built North American Japanese-TV service |
| Occasional viewing | Viki or free ad-supported channels | No immediate paid specialist subscription |
| One anime subscription for a household | Crunchyroll Mega Fan | Up to four simultaneous devices and offline viewing in the advertised plan |
Common reasons a show will not play
The title appears in search but is blocked
This usually reflects geographic licensing, an indexed page from another territory or a title that recently left the service. Search inside the local app and open the service’s own title page.
Crunchyroll does not have a popular anime
Another platform may hold the license, only some seasons may be available, or the title may use a different spelling. Anime rights are divided among services; VIZ’s partner list illustrates why country and language version matter.
Subtitles or dubs are missing
Language tracks are licensed separately and are title-specific. Do not infer availability from another season, another country or another platform.
Hulu confusion
U.S. Hulu and Hulu Japan are different services. A Hulu Japan listing is not evidence that a U.S. Hulu subscription includes the program.

The headline originally specified 2023, but this edition is updated for 2026. Prices and catalogs shown above are current signals observed in August 2026, not historical 2023 rates. For comparison, an October 2023 Amazon announcement cited Crunchyroll U.S. pricing beginning at $7.99 per month, demonstrating why old prices should not be reused as current ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Crunchyroll only anime?
It is primarily an anime service. It is not a complete source for Japanese dramas, variety shows, NHK programming or domestic television.
Can I use Hulu Japan in the United States?
No. Hulu Japan and the U.S. Hulu service are separate offerings with different catalogs and availability.
Best Value
- The Eminence in Shadow: Season 2 - Premium Box Set [Blu-Ray]
Where can I watch Japanese dramas with English subtitles?
Start with Netflix or Rakuten Viki, then verify the subtitle track on the exact title. Jme also has English subtitles on selected programs.
Is Jme worth paying for?
It is the most targeted option here for North American viewers who want Japanese television, NHK-related programs, variety or documentaries. It is less suitable if you only want anime.
Can I watch Japanese shows free?
Yes, but only selected titles are free. Viki offers ad-supported programs, and the Crunchyroll Channel is a free linear anime channel on selected U.S. partner platforms.
Are unofficial streaming sites safe or legal?
They are often unauthorized and can present malware, deceptive ads and unreliable video. Use official services, rentals, purchases or verified ad-supported platforms instead.
The Bottom Line
Search your must-watch titles first. For most viewers, that means Crunchyroll for anime, Netflix or Viki for dramas, Jme for Japanese television, and HIDIVE only when its catalog fills a specific gap.
