HOLE IN THE WALL: The Ultimate Outlaw Fortress is a feature documentary about the Hole-in-the-Wall region of Johnson County, Wyoming, and its layered local history. A screening was announced for October 9, 2026, in Lander, but the available listings do not confirm that the full film can be streamed or purchased online.
What is the Hole in the Wall documentary about?
Directed by Stephen Howard Tucker and commissioned by the Johnson County Tourism Association, HOLE IN THE WALL: The Ultimate Outlaw Fortress focuses on Hole-in-the-Wall country in Wyoming. The film’s official description frames the region through its red-sandstone landscape, local family stories and outlaw lore, while also including Native American presence, the Johnson County War and the area’s connection to Owen Wister’s 1902 novel The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains. These are the documentary’s stated subjects, not independent verification of every legend associated with the place.
The film names Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, lawman Joe LaFors and Nate Champion among its subjects. Wyoming 250 lists the runtime as 70 minutes and identifies Bighorn Films as its producer in 2025.

Where is Hole-in-the-Wall country?
Hole-in-the-Wall is a gap or pass in a red-sandstone wall near Kaycee, in Johnson County, Wyoming. The Wyoming Office of Tourism places it on Willow Creek Ranch, an active cattle and horse ranch, about 30 miles southwest of Kaycee. Its visitor description refers to a dirt-road approach and a half-mile hike; because this route involves an active ranch, confirm access arrangements before setting out. See the Wyoming Office of Tourism visitor information.
What to know before visiting the trail
The BLM describes a separate Hole-in-the-Wall Foot Trail: a three-mile route that begins on state land and ends on BLM land. It is not the same route as the half-mile hike described by Wyoming Office of Tourism. The BLM characterizes the area as primitive, with no services, and asks visitors to respect private property. Bring sufficient water, food and fuel, and consult the BLM trail guidance before travel.
