WEBTOON is one option for reading comics online without paying upfront: it says the app is free to download and use, and its WEBTOON Original series are free to read. That does not mean every episode is immediately free in the same way. Some access depends on the series, release timing, ads, or a temporary unlock.
What can you read for free on WEBTOON?
WEBTOON’s free-to-read claim applies to its Originals, but episode access varies. Some episodes may be available on the regular release schedule, while newer or completed-series episodes can have separate unlock rules. WEBTOON also hosts CANVAS, where creators can publish their work; availability and access terms may differ from series to series. WEBTOON describes its free app and reading options in its support information, and its Help Center explains CANVAS and episode access features.
How WEBTOON’s free and paid unlocks work
| Access option | How it works | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Regular free reading | WEBTOON says Originals are free to read. | Access timing can vary by episode and series. |
| Fast Pass | Use Coins to read some latest episodes before their regular release date. | WEBTOON says Fast Pass episodes become free after a specific period; the timing is not stated in the cited support summary. WEBTOON Help Center |
| Ad Pass | Watch a short ad to unlock an episode when the option is offered. | According to WEBTOON’s support article, the unlock remains available for three days. WEBTOON Help Center |
| Daily Pass | For some completed series, unlock one Daily Pass episode free per day for each eligible series. | Each Daily Pass unlock is available for 14 days, according to WEBTOON’s Help Center. WEBTOON Help Center |
Fast Pass is an optional early-access purchase, not a requirement to read every series: where the episode follows the stated rule, waiting allows it to become free later. Ad Pass and Daily Pass are also limited unlocks, not permanent ownership.
Can you read episodes offline?
WEBTOON says its mobile app supports downloading episodes for offline reading. Download availability is a useful feature for reading without a connection, but it does not change the access conditions attached to an episode. See WEBTOON’s Help Center information on downloads for the service’s current guidance.

Choosing a legal place to read comics or manga
“Webtoon,” “comic,” and “manga” are not interchangeable catalog promises. WEBTOON’s information establishes how its own app and series access work; it does not establish that all manga is available there or provide a verified comparison with other legal platforms. Before choosing a service, check whether it carries the kind of titles you want, which episodes are free, whether access requires waiting, ads, or Coins, whether offline reading is supported, and whether the service is available in your country.
Use official services and creator-authorized publications rather than assuming that a site offering free scans has permission to distribute them. For WEBTOON specifically, check an individual series and episode for its current access label, since the rules differ by series and release.
