What is The Mole Agent about?
Private investigator Rómulo Aitken recruits Sergio Chamy to pose as a resident of a retirement home and report on a client’s concern for her mother’s well-being. As Sergio learns how to use the tools of an amateur spy, he also gets to know the people who live there.

The setup suggests a conventional undercover investigation, but the film’s attention increasingly turns to Sergio’s everyday relationships with the residents. Motto Pictures describes the documentary as blending observational filmmaking with spy-movie conventions; PBS POV emphasizes the tension between carrying out the assignment and becoming involved in the residents’ lives. The story begins with a worry about possible mistreatment, but it should not be described as proof that abuse occurred: the synopsis says the underlying truth is not what the investigator expected.
How does it differ from A Man on the Inside?
Netflix’s Tudum trailer page, published October 28, 2024, says A Man on the Inside “is based on the documentary The Mole Agent.” That establishes the source inspiration, not a claim that the scripted series recounts Sergio’s case or depicts him.

The films share the undercover premise, but their cases and protagonists are distinct. The documentary follows a real subject and assignment; the Netflix series builds a fictional investigation around Charles. Aging and human connection are useful themes to consider in both, but that is an interpretation of their stories, not evidence that the series directly dramatizes events from the documentary.

Maite Alberdi directed The Mole Agent, with Marcela Santibáñez as producer. The listed credits also include cinematographer Pablo Valdés, editor Carolina Siraqyan, and composer Vincent van Warmerdam.
The film premiered at Sundance in 2020. It was nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 93rd Academy Awards; American Documentary announced the nomination on March 15, 2021. PBS POV records its US television debut as January 25, 2021.
