In the United States, call or text 988 for urgent mental-health crisis support; in England, call NHS 111 and choose the mental-health option. If someone is in immediate danger, use emergency services: call 911 in the United States or 999 in England. These numbers are location-specific, not universal.
This guide covers verified services in the United States and England. If you are elsewhere, contact your local emergency number for immediate danger, or consult an official local health-service directory for crisis and ongoing care.
First decide how urgent the situation is
Use the most urgent route that fits what is happening. A crisis line or urgent mental-health service can help with distress, but it is not a substitute for emergency response when someone’s life may be at risk.
- Immediate danger or a medical emergency: Call emergency services or go to an emergency department. In the United States, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. In England, call 999 or go to A&E if someone’s life is at risk or they do not feel able to keep themselves or another person safe.
- Urgent distress without immediate danger: In the United States, call or text 988, or use 988 Lifeline chat. In England, call NHS 111 and choose the mental-health option, or use 111 online.
- Ongoing support: Use an official treatment locator or a local health-service referral route. Eligibility and availability vary by location.
If you are outside the United States or England, use your local emergency number for immediate danger and an official local health-service directory for non-emergency support. The services below should not be assumed to operate internationally.

This decision path is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If the situation changes and someone becomes unable to keep themselves or another person safe, move from a non-emergency route to emergency help. For a less urgent need, focus on a local service that can arrange continuing care rather than expecting a crisis line to provide ongoing treatment.
United States: crisis help through 988
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides support for mental-health, suicide-related, and substance-use-related crises. You can call or text 988, or start an online chat through the 988 Lifeline. You can also contact the service when you are worried about someone else. Text messaging may incur standard mobile data or messaging rates.
988 is a crisis-support route, not a guarantee of a particular local intervention. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) notes that some community crisis services are not available in every U.S. area. The type of response and local options can therefore depend on where you are. Check current contact methods and service information on the official Lifeline or SAMHSA pages rather than assuming every community offers the same services.
If someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room rather than waiting for a local crisis response. If you are unsure whether the issue is urgent but it does not appear to be an immediate emergency, 988 can be contacted for crisis support; it is also an option for someone concerned about another person.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported in 2026 that the Lifeline had received more than 25 million contacts by call, text, chat, and ASL videophone since launch. That figure describes cumulative contacts, not a measure of outcomes or a promise about response time. HHS also announced a $255 million award to Vibrant Emotional Health to administer the Lifeline in 2026. These figures provide context about the service; they do not establish what response will be available in a particular area.

England: urgent mental-health help through NHS 111
For urgent mental-health help that is not an immediate emergency, call NHS 111 and select the mental-health option, or use 111 online. NHS England says people of all ages can use this route, including family and friends who are concerned about someone. It connects callers with a trained mental-health professional who can help identify next steps.
If someone’s life is at risk or they cannot keep themselves or another person safe, call 999 or go to A&E. NHS guidance treats a mental-health emergency as seriously as a physical one: “A mental health emergency should be taken as seriously as a physical one. You will not be wasting anyone’s time.” The NHS page carrying this guidance was last reviewed on 26 April 2023 and displayed a next review date of 26 April 2026, so check the current NHS guidance before relying on or quoting that wording. In an emergency, do not delay contacting emergency services to resolve a page-review question.
NHS 111’s mental-health route is for urgent, non-emergency support; 999 and A&E are the emergency routes. NHS England says the 111 service can direct people to next steps, but the appropriate service and availability can vary. If the need is ongoing rather than urgent, use the separate talking-therapy or GP access routes described below.

Listening support in England
For someone who needs someone to listen, NHS lists Samaritans at 116 123. For children and young people under 19, Childline is available at 0800 1111. These are listening-support services; use 999 or A&E if there is immediate danger. A listening service should not be treated as an emergency response or as a substitute for arranging treatment when continuing care is needed.
Finding ongoing treatment
United States
SAMHSA’s National Helpline offers treatment referral and information. To look for providers, use the official FindTreatment.gov locator. A locator can help identify options, but it does not by itself confirm that a provider is suitable or has an opening. Contact providers directly to confirm that they offer the care you need, are accepting patients, and explain any eligibility, insurance, or payment requirements.

When comparing options, consider whether the service is meant for the type of support you are seeking and whether it is practical for your location and circumstances. Ask about cost and coverage, any referral or eligibility requirements, and the service’s current availability. If an option is not accessible to you or cannot provide the needed care, continue checking official local referral routes. For urgent distress, use a crisis route rather than waiting for routine treatment arrangements.
England
If you are registered with a GP, you can self-refer for free NHS talking therapies in most areas. Local eligibility and availability vary, so check the NHS service information for your area or ask your GP how to access care. “In most areas” matters: do not assume the same referral process applies everywhere, and verify that you meet local criteria.

How to choose among non-emergency options
Before contacting a service, consider what kind of help is needed and whether the option is available where you are. A useful comparison is not simply which service sounds familiar; it is whether the route fits the urgency, location, access needs, and kind of care required. Compare:
- Urgency: Is this an immediate safety emergency, an urgent crisis, or a need for ongoing treatment? Emergency services, crisis support, and treatment referral serve different purposes.
- Location: Is the service intended for your country or local area? Local crisis-response capacity can differ. The numbers in this guide are for the United States and England only.
- Contact method and availability: Does it offer phone, text, chat, or in-person support, and is that method currently available to you? 988 offers call, text, and chat; confirm current options on the service’s official page. Not every local service offers the same choices.
- Age and eligibility: Check who may use the service and any referral or registration requirements. For example, NHS England says its urgent 111 mental-health route is open to people of all ages, while Childline is listed for people under 19. NHS talking therapies in England require GP registration for self-referral and are free in most areas.
- Cost and coverage: Confirm whether there are charges, insurance requirements, or other payment conditions. Standard mobile data or messaging rates may apply to texts to 988. Do not assume that a provider locator confirms coverage or cost.
- Accessibility and language: Check the service’s current language and accessibility options directly, especially if you need an interpreter or an accessible contact method. The 988 service reports contacts through ASL videophone, but verify current options before relying on a particular access route.
- Type of help: A crisis service supports urgent distress; a treatment locator, clinician, or talking-therapy referral route is more appropriate for arranging continuing care. A listening-support service can offer someone to talk to, but is not the same as emergency response or ongoing treatment.
Service details can change, and a listed route may not fit every person or community. Use the official pages for current contact information and check eligibility, local availability, accessibility, language, cost, and privacy details with the service before sharing sensitive information or arranging care. If there is immediate danger, do not let a comparison exercise delay emergency help.

How to support someone who may be in crisis
The World Health Organization recommends finding a quiet time and place to talk, listening, and encouraging professional support. You do not need to solve the problem or make a diagnosis to take someone’s concern seriously. WHO’s 2026 suicide Q&A puts the immediate-safety advice plainly: “If you think someone is in immediate danger, don’t leave them alone. Contact the emergency services, a crisis line, a health worker or a family member.”

- Start a calm conversation. Choose a quiet place and give the person your attention. Use direct, non-judgmental language and let them explain what is happening.
- Listen and encourage appropriate help. Ask what support would feel manageable and offer to help contact a crisis service, clinician, or trusted person. The aim is to connect them with appropriate support, not to decide on a diagnosis yourself.
- Escalate if there is immediate danger. WHO advises not leaving someone alone if they appear to be in immediate danger. Contact emergency services, a crisis line, a health worker, or a family member. Use the local emergency route for a life-threatening situation.
- Stay practical. If the person agrees, help them make the call, find a nearby service, or arrange a next step. Do not promise confidentiality if safety is at risk.
It is also appropriate to contact a crisis service because you are worried about someone else: 988 in the United States and NHS 111’s mental-health route in England both accept concerns from family or friends. If you are helping from a distance, use the same urgency distinction: contact the relevant crisis route for urgent distress, and emergency services if there is immediate danger. Do not leave someone alone when you believe they are in immediate danger, if you are physically with them.

Access depends on location and service capacity. If a non-emergency option cannot help, ask what alternative local service or next step is available, then contact another official route such as a clinician, GP, or treatment referral service. If the situation becomes immediately unsafe, switch to emergency services rather than continuing to search for a routine appointment.
For ongoing care, a treatment locator is a way to find possible providers, not a confirmation of openings, cost, insurance acceptance, eligibility, or fit. Verify those details with the provider or local health service. Similarly, do not assume that a crisis line can guarantee a particular local intervention: some community crisis services are not available in every U.S. area, and availability more generally depends on location.
For current contact details and local guidance, use the official service pages: 988 Lifeline, SAMHSA 988 information, NHS 111 online, and NHS mental-health guidance. Recheck these pages when using the services, since contact details and service options can change.

If you are helping someone else, listening and connecting them with appropriate support are useful steps; do not leave them alone if they appear to be in immediate danger. Always verify current local availability and eligibility.
