How to Fix Buffering or Playback Problems When Streaming Documentary Videos

Diagnose documentary buffering by comparing titles, devices, services, and networks, then work through practical connection, restart, update, and support steps.

If a documentary keeps pausing to load, first find out whether the problem is limited to that title, one device, one streaming service, or your whole connection. That quick comparison helps you choose a relevant fix instead of changing settings—or buying equipment—at random. Buffering often points to a weak or unstable connection, but an outdated app or device can cause similar symptoms.

Work through the checks below one at a time. After each change, replay the same part of the documentary and note whether the symptom changed. That gives you a more useful answer than making several changes at once and guessing which one helped.

First identify what is going wrong

Buffering means playback pauses while the video loads. A video that freezes, will not start, stutters, skips, or looks distorted may have a different cause. Netflix distinguishes buffering from distorted or glitchy playback: its guidance connects buffering with a potentially weak or unstable internet connection or a device that needs an update, while glitches and stuttering can involve the device or video cable. Treat the symptom as a clue, not a diagnosis.

Before changing settings, write down what you see: does the video repeatedly stop and show a loading indicator, freeze on one frame, fail before it starts, skip ahead, or look distorted? Note whether sound continues and whether the problem happens at the same point each time. These observations help you explain the issue to the service or your ISP, but they do not by themselves identify the cause.

Check whether it is one title or many

Try another documentary or video in the same service. If other titles play normally but one does not, the issue may be specific to that title. Where the service offers a report option, use it rather than resetting your network. Netflix, for example, lets viewers report a title problem through Viewing Activity; its content team may investigate.

For a useful comparison, keep the device and network the same and switch only the title. If the second video plays, go back to the original title once to confirm that the problem is repeatable. If several videos have trouble, the cause is less likely to be limited to that one documentary, although this test alone cannot settle the diagnosis.

Check whether it is one device or several

Try the same service on another device connected to the same network. If practical, also try the affected device on another network. YouTube recommends changing the internet connection, switching between its app and website, or testing another supported device. These comparisons can narrow the possibilities, but no single test proves the cause.

  • If one device fails across several services, look first at that device, its app, browser, software, or connection.
  • If several devices fail across services on the same home network, investigate the shared network or a possible outage.
  • If the problem occurs only on one service, check that service’s status and troubleshooting guidance.

Change one comparison at a time where possible. For example, test a second device on the same Wi-Fi before switching both device and network. Then, if you can, test the original device on an alternate connection. Keeping other factors the same makes the result easier to interpret: if only one device has trouble, focus on it; if devices on the same network share the problem, look at the network or the service affecting them.

Public Wi-Fi may block video services. A café, hotel, or school network may not permit streaming; mobile hotspots, cellular connections, or satellite internet may also be too slow for Netflix in some circumstances. Check the network’s rules before changing device settings. A failure on a restricted public network does not necessarily mean your home device or streaming account is faulty.

Check the connection without overreading a speed test

Use the streaming service’s recommended test when available. Netflix directs viewers on computers and mobile devices to Fast.com and provides a speed check in its app for connected TV devices. Its internet-speed guidance discusses video quality and factors that affect streaming; it does not make one speed-test result a universal diagnosis. A test can help you describe the connection, but it cannot by itself show whether the cause is Wi-Fi, the device, the service, or a temporary network problem.

Use the test on the device or connection that is actually having trouble when the service makes that possible. Netflix’s recommended method differs by device: Fast.com for computer and mobile users, and the in-app speed check for a TV-connected device. Follow the service’s current instructions because testing options and recommendations can change. Do not assume that one number applies to every documentary, service, device, or playback quality.

Also consider what the comparison tests have shown. A speed result is one piece of evidence; the same title working on another device or the same device working on another network can be just as helpful. If the speed test looks adequate but only one title fails, for example, continue with the title-specific route rather than treating the test as proof that your home connection is faultless.

If the connection seems limited, lowering the video quality may make playback more stable. Netflix notes that an internet provider may limit speed and recommends changing video quality in that situation. The exact controls and available quality options vary by service and device, so use the service’s own current help instructions rather than assuming every player has the same menu. If lowering quality helps, it is a practical workaround and a clue about connection capacity; it does not establish why the connection is limited.

Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection

A weak or fluctuating Wi-Fi signal can interrupt playback even when the internet service itself is working. If both your router and streaming device support Ethernet, connect them temporarily and replay the same part of the documentary. If the wired connection behaves differently, Wi-Fi may be part of the problem. Ethernet is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed fix: a cable cannot resolve a title-specific fault, service outage, or every device problem.

For a fair test, use the same device, service, and part of the video; change only the connection from Wi-Fi to cable. If you do not have compatible ports or a safe way to route a cable, skip this comparison. You do not need to purchase a cable just to complete the basic troubleshooting sequence. First try the no-cost placement adjustments below, and consider a cable only if it is compatible and useful for a temporary wired test.

Restart the device and network equipment

Restarting can clear a temporary problem in the streaming device, app, router, or modem. Make one change at a time and replay the same point in the video after each change, so you can tell whether it helped. If the issue affects only one device, begin with that device; if several devices and services are affected, include the shared network equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close the streaming app or browser, then restart the device you are watching on. Reopen the service and test the same title and playback point.
  2. If the problem continues, restart the modem and router. Netflix’s procedure is to unplug both, wait 30 seconds, reconnect them, and allow time for the network to return. Some equipment takes longer to reconnect.
  3. Once the network is back, open the service again and replay the same point. If several devices are affected, test another device on the network before moving on to device-specific changes.

Prime Video also recommends restarting the connected device and network equipment when connection trouble persists. If you use a combined modem-router, follow its manufacturer’s restart instructions; do not assume it has separate units or identical indicator lights. Allow the equipment time to reconnect before deciding the restart did not help.

Restarting is a basic check, not a reason to repeat the same cycle indefinitely. If the same failure returns, move on to comparisons and updates, then contact the relevant support team if those steps do not resolve it. Keep track of whether restarting changed anything: a temporary improvement that returns can be useful context when you describe the issue.

Improve Wi-Fi before buying anything

Try placement changes first. Netflix recommends moving the router and viewing device closer together, putting the router in an open area above the floor, and moving it away from other wireless devices and appliances. These adjustments cost nothing and may help if the signal is weak where you watch.

  • Move the viewing device closer to the router, if practical.
  • Place the router in an open, elevated spot rather than on the floor or inside an enclosed area.
  • Move the router away from appliances and other wireless devices where possible.
  • If compatible, test Ethernet temporarily to compare a wired path with Wi-Fi.

Make one placement change and retry before making another. If you move both the router and viewing device, for example, you will know the signal path changed but not which adjustment mattered. Test near the usual viewing location, since a connection that works next to the router may not behave the same where you normally watch.

If you choose to try a cable, check that the router and streaming device have compatible ports, that the length reaches safely, and that the cable can be routed without creating a trip hazard. No particular cable model is required by the troubleshooting steps, and using a cable does not guarantee a cure. Treat it as an optional way to compare wired and Wi-Fi playback, not as a purchase you must make before asking for help.

Update the app, device, or browser

An outdated app, operating system, or browser can interfere with playback. Update the component you use, then restart it and test again. YouTube also recommends closing and reopening the browser, updating it, and restarting the device. Because update controls differ across devices, use the current instructions for your device rather than expecting identical menus everywhere.

If you use more than one way to watch—such as an app and a browser—compare them only if both are supported by the service. A result that differs between the app and website makes the software route worth checking; it does not mean the other version will work on every device.

For computer playback

Close excess browser tabs and other applications that may be using memory or processing resources. If playback is distorted, glitchy, skipping, or stuttering rather than pausing to load, this is especially relevant: Netflix’s guidance separates those symptoms from buffering and includes resource-consuming computer applications among the things to check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For browser trouble, close and reopen the browser, check for an update, and restart the computer if you have not already done so. Then revisit the same service and replay the same point. If the problem continues in one browser but another supported option works, include that difference when contacting the service.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For app playback

Close and reopen the app, check for an update, and restart the device. YouTube’s Android app troubleshooting also includes clearing the app cache. Menu names differ by device and software version, so use the operating system’s current app settings rather than following an assumed path that may not match your screen. Cache clearing is an app-specific step, not a general fix for a slow or restricted internet connection.

What to do when only a documentary is affected

If other titles in the same service play correctly on the same device and network, avoid repeatedly restarting your router or changing Wi-Fi settings. Use the service’s title-reporting feature if available. On Netflix, report the affected title through Viewing Activity. Keep the distinction clear when contacting support: say that other videos play normally and identify the documentary and the point where playback fails.

When reporting the issue, include the name of the title, the device you used, and the symptom—such as buffering, freezing, failure to start, or distortion. If you already tested other titles on the same setup, say whether they played normally. That information helps distinguish a title-specific report from a broader device or connection complaint. Netflix says its content team may investigate reports submitted through Viewing Activity; a report is not an instant repair or a guarantee about the outcome.

When to contact the streaming service or your ISP

Contact the streaming service

Contact the provider when one title remains broken while other content works, or when the issue appears limited to that provider after you have compared another service or device. Include the title, device, app or browser, and whether the problem is buffering, failure to start, freezing, or distorted playback. Netflix’s title-reporting process is one available route for title-specific issues.

If multiple titles fail only in one service, use that service’s own current troubleshooting guidance and support options. Before you contact support, note the tests you performed: whether another title played on the same device, whether another device had the same problem, and whether the app or website behaved differently. These comparisons do not prove that the service is at fault, but they give support a clearer picture than “the internet is broken.”

Contact your internet provider

If basic device, app, and network checks do not resolve a connection problem—especially when multiple devices or services are affected—contact your ISP. Report whether you tested on Wi-Fi or with a direct cable connection, which devices are affected, and whether the problem is intermittent or constant. Netflix identifies the connection type and affected device as useful information for the ISP.

Tell the ISP what you actually observed rather than presenting a guess as a diagnosis. For example, explain whether playback fails on several devices, whether you tried Wi-Fi and a direct cable, and whether the issue affects one service or multiple services. If you used the streaming service’s speed check, provide the result as context, not as proof of a particular fault.

Prime Video notes that if its app works on another network but not the current one, the ISP may need to investigate, including whether DNS traffic on port 53 is blocked. This is a narrow network-support detail; it is not a reason to change DNS settings casually. Ask the ISP to check the issue if the comparison points to the network.

A quick decision guide

  • One title fails; other titles work: report the title to the streaming service where possible.
  • One device fails across services: restart and update that device, app, or browser; then compare with another device.
  • Several devices fail across services on one network: restart network equipment, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available, and contact the ISP if the problem persists.
  • Playback is glitchy or distorted rather than buffering: check updates, computer resources, and device or video-cable connections instead of treating it as a speed problem alone.
  • Streaming fails only on public Wi-Fi: check whether that network allows video services.

The comparisons are more useful as a sequence than as a hunt for one magic setting: start with the title, then compare devices and services, check the connection using the service’s method, and move through restart, placement, and update steps. Stop when the issue is resolved. If it persists, use the test results to contact the service or ISP best placed to investigate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my documentary keep buffering?

A weak or unstable connection is one possibility, but a device or app problem can look similar. Try another title in the same service, then compare another device on the same network. Those checks help separate a title-specific issue from one affecting a device or the shared connection.

Why does the video keep stopping to load even when a speed test looks fine?

A speed test is useful context, not a universal diagnosis. It cannot by itself show whether the cause is Wi-Fi, a device, the streaming service, or a temporary network problem. Compare playback on another title or device, and use the service’s recommended speed-check method for your device.

Why does it buffer on my TV but not my phone?

That difference makes the TV, its app, or its connection path worth checking first, but it does not prove which one is responsible. Restart and update the TV app or device, and compare the TV’s Wi-Fi playback with Ethernet if the TV and router support it. Netflix offers an in-app speed check for TV-connected devices.

Why does only one documentary keep freezing?

If other titles play normally on the same service, device, and network, the problem may be specific to that documentary. Use the service’s report-a-problem option where available; Netflix accepts title reports through Viewing Activity. Tell support that other titles work and identify where playback fails.

Should I buy an Ethernet cable to stop streaming videos from buffering?

Not as a first step. Ethernet is an optional diagnostic comparison when both the router and streaming device have compatible ports. Try no-cost Wi-Fi placement changes first, and remember that a wired test is not guaranteed to fix a title fault, service issue, or device problem.

When should I contact my internet provider?

Contact your ISP if basic app, device, and network checks do not resolve a connection problem, particularly when several devices or services are affected. Explain which devices you tested and whether they used Wi-Fi or a direct cable. Do not change DNS settings casually; if relevant, ask the ISP to investigate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start by comparing titles, devices, services, and networks so you do not treat every playback problem as a broadband fault. Then use the service’s speed-check guidance, restart and update the affected equipment, and try no-cost Wi-Fi placement changes. Report a title-specific failure to the streaming service; contact your ISP when the evidence points to a persistent shared connection problem.
