Wrestler Rusev said he took his surname from Vasil Rusev, a friend from his rowing classes, while “Alexander” simply sounded like a good Bulgarian name to him. He also credited himself and Lana with developing “Rusev udria, Rusev machka” after watching Rocky IV, drawing on an idea he remembered as “What Drago hits, he destroys.”
Why did Rusev choose that name?
In a Bulgarian-language TV+ interview, as transcribed in English by Wrestling Inc. on June 5, 2018, Rusev said WWE gave him the opportunity to choose a name. He explained: “I had a friend named Vasil Rusev in my rowing classes. I’ve always liked that name.”
He distinguished the two parts of the name: “The ‘Alexander’ name just sounded like a good Bulgarian name, but the Rusev part I got from my friend Vasil.” In his account, then, “Rusev” was a personal choice rooted in a friend’s name, while “Alexander” was chosen for its Bulgarian sound.
How did the catchphrase come about?
Rusev said WWE wanted him to have a Bulgarian line before his entrance music, but at first he did not know what to say. He credited himself and Lana with coming up with the concept after they watched Rocky IV.

In the interview transcription, he said: “The idea for ‘Rusev udria, Rusev machka’ came from me and Lana watching Rocky 4.” He described the inspiration as “There was something along the lines of ‘What Drago hits, he destroys,’ which I liked a lot and I wanted to do something similar to it.” He said the wording came naturally when he took the microphone.
What does “Rusev udria, Rusev machka” mean?
Rusev’s account supports describing the catchphrase’s intended idea as a declaration that Rusev hits and crushes or destroys his opponents. It does not establish a precise, word-for-word Bulgarian translation. The Drago wording is his recollection of the inspiration, not a verified verbatim line from Rocky IV.

WWE’s own presentation fits that broad interpretation: its Rusev profile associates the character with defeating and crushing opponents, and a September 18, 2018 recap uses “Machka Kick” and “crush” in its coverage. Those examples show how WWE framed the character; they do not independently verify a literal translation.
