In September 2025, the Department of Homeland Security used a short Theo Von clip in a social-media video promoting deportations. Von publicly said he had not approved its use, asked DHS to take the video down, and objected that the edit did not convey the nuance of his views on immigration. The Los Angeles Times reported that DHS removed the post on September 24.
How the dispute unfolded
-
September 23, 2025: DHS posted a video to its official X account that opened with Von saying, “Heard you got deported, dude,” followed by “Bye.” It then cut to footage of federal agents detaining people and deportation figures, according to the Los Angeles Times.

September 24: Von objected in a post reproduced by Variety. He said he had not approved the use, asked DHS to send a check and remove the video, and wrote that his thoughts and heart on immigration were “alot more nuanced than this video allows.”

Later that morning: The Los Angeles Times reported that DHS had removed its post after Von requested payment or removal. The paper also reported that Von deleted his demand post.

Publication timing explains differing reports about whether the video was still online: TheWrap said it remained live when its September 24 story was published and DHS had not yet responded to its request for comment. That earlier status does not contradict the Los Angeles Times’ later report of removal.
What Von said—and what the clip left out
Variety described the DHS video as 31 seconds long and reproduced Von’s full post:
“Yooo DHS i didnt approve to be used in this. I know you know my address so send a check. And please take this down and please keep me out of your ‘banger’ deportation videos. When it comes to immigration my thoughts and heart are alot more nuanced than this video allows. Bye!”

This was a social-media statement attributed to Von, not a quote from an independently recorded interview. His objection was that he had not approved the use and that the edit did not represent the nuance he saw in his views. That states his position; it does not establish a legal conclusion about permission, copyright, or endorsement.
Rolling Stone reported that the line came from a longer video in which Von was answering a fan who had asked him to record a message for a friend who had been deported. In that original setting, the remark was a brief message to a particular person. Placed at the start of a government deportation montage, it could carry a broader meaning than the original exchange.
The Los Angeles Times also described a June podcast discussion in which Von called the immigration system “broken,” supported a path to citizenship for productive people, and said that seeing children separated from parents was heartbreaking. That is relevant context for his stated objection, but it does not establish a complete or unchanging account of his politics.

What the video claimed about deportations
The figures were claims displayed in DHS’s promotional video, as described by news outlets; the reports do not independently verify the totals. They also differ on the timeframe:
| Outlet | Reported figure in the video | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles Times | 2 million people in 250 days, including 1.6 million self-departures and 400,000 government deportations | Figures attributed to the DHS video by the Los Angeles Times; not independently verified in its account. |
| Variety | 2 million in the first 150 days of Trump’s second term | Figure attributed to the DHS video by Variety; its timeframe differs from the Los Angeles Times’ report. |
The original post was removed, and the reporting does not establish which timeframe appeared in the version each outlet examined. The discrepancy should therefore remain unresolved rather than being treated as a single confirmed count.

The Los Angeles Times reported that DHS removed the X post on September 24 after Von asked for payment or removal. The reports cited here do not establish a court finding or a legal resolution over the clip’s use. The documented outcome is the removal of the post, alongside Von’s public objection—not a ruling on whether the use was lawful.
