Prime Video’s Countdown ends Season 1 on an unresolved cliffhanger, and it has not been renewed. Amazon did not order a second season, and star Jensen Ackles publicly confirmed the non-renewal on October 10, 2025. As of October 2026, the Season 1 finale is the last released episode of the series, so viewers are left with a setup that never gets paid off on screen.
What the series is about
Countdown is a Prime Video action thriller in which Jensen Ackles plays LAPD detective Mark Meachum. According to the official series synopsis on Prime Video, Meachum is recruited into a secret task force after a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered. The investigation then uncovers a wider conspiracy, and that larger conspiracy is what drives the season toward its ending.
How the Season 1 finale ends
The first season runs 13 episodes, according to Prime Video’s listing for the 2025 season. The last episode, titled “Your People are in Danger,” is listed with a September 3, 2025 air date on Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing.

The finale does not wrap up its central threat. It leaves the safety of Amber Oliveras in doubt and sets up the team’s next case. TV Insider’s finale coverage at the time described viewers having reason to be worried about Oliveras in the final moments. The episode works as a setup rather than a conclusion: the immediate danger is still live when the credits roll, and the broader conspiracy is left open.
Because the ending points forward, it is easy to read it as a sign that more is coming. That expectation is the part that did not hold up, as the next section explains.

Was Countdown renewed for Season 2?
No. Prime Video did not pick the series up for another season, and Ackles confirmed the outcome publicly on October 10, 2025, reported by TVLine. In a video statement, he said: “As some of you may have seen already, Countdown did not get picked up for another season.”

- It is a statement about renewal status. It does not explain why Amazon made the decision, and the available reporting does not give a reason.
- It came after the finale aired, so any renewal speculation from before the ending should be treated as outdated.
What the ending means for viewers
The cliffhanger and the cancellation are separate facts. The finale points toward more story involving Oliveras and the team, but the cancellation means no released continuation resolves it. Anyone looking for an answer to the Oliveras situation or the next case will not find it in a later season, and the story should be judged as a single, open-ended season.
