Murder Mountain is in southern Humboldt County, California, near the small community of Alderpoint. Humboldt is one of the three counties that make up the Emerald Triangle, so Murder Mountain sits inside the region rather than beside it. “Murder Mountain” is the local name of a place, not another name for the Emerald Triangle.
The Emerald Triangle is a three-county region
The Emerald Triangle is the informal name for a part of Northern California made up of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity counties. A CBS San Francisco report published September 11, 2014, titled “Emerald Triangle’s ‘Murder Mountain’ In Marijuana Country Living Up To Its Name,” uses that three-county definition. The name refers to a region known for cannabis cultivation, not to an official government boundary, so readers should treat the three counties as the usual definition rather than a legal one.
Where Murder Mountain sits within the region
Murder Mountain lies in the southern part of Humboldt County, which is the county that connects the local setting to the wider region. The 2014 CBS report places it miles off the main highway and reports on the nearby community of Alderpoint. Because the sources reviewed for this article do not give coordinates or a formal boundary, the most reliable way to locate it is by county and nearby town.
Murder Mountain and Alderpoint
Alderpoint is the town most often named alongside the mountain. A later narrative from the podcast series “Murder, She Told” describes Alder Point as a small Humboldt County town flanked by the peak. That account also recounts how the nickname arose, involving a couple named Carson and a 1982 murder. It is the author’s telling of the local story rather than an official history or a formal naming decision, and the page does not provide a year of publication in the captured content.

A documentary’s framing of the setting
The 2019 “Murder Mountain” episode of the Stop and Search podcast, with director Joshua Zeman, describes the documentary as set in California’s Emerald Triangle. It does not define the region’s county lines, so for the county-level answer the 2014 CBS report remains the more precise reference.
Keeping the names distinct
Three terms are easy to blur:
- Emerald Triangle: the broader region of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity counties.
- Humboldt County: the county that contains Murder Mountain’s southern location.
- Murder Mountain: a local place name used in reporting and in documentary framing, near Alderpoint.
Murder Mountain is not a synonym for the whole region, and it does not stand for Mendocino or Trinity County.

Dating the reporting
Most published descriptions of Murder Mountain come from a few years ago, and the 2014 CBS piece is the earliest of them. It describes the area in the context of marijuana cultivation and law enforcement at that time. In that report, Lt. Steve Knight of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department said: “The local growers don’t want law enforcement coming in to where marijuana is at. They are afraid that we will see the marijuana and will take it from them, and that is their living.” That remark reflects conditions in 2014, not current attitudes among residents or current enforcement practice, and should be cited with his role and the year.
The same report includes a nationwide marijuana-sales estimate from 2014. It is not a statistic about the Emerald Triangle or Murder Mountain, and it should not be used to describe the region’s geography or economy.
