Universal Studios owns the 1981 De Lorean DMC-12 and has it on permanent loan to the museum, where the National Historic Vehicle Register lists it as being on permanent display.
What happened to the screen-used DeLorean?
The Hagerty Drivers Foundation’s National Historic Vehicle Register identifies the car as the hero vehicle used in the 1985 film. Universal Studios acquired it along with two other DeLoreans for the first movie and has owned it since. The register’s vehicle record says the car was restored in 2012–13 in a project spearheaded by Back to the Future writer Bob Gale, with Joe Walser leading a team of fans. Film-specific details, including the flux bands, time circuit and flux capacitor, were restored or reproduced.
Is the car drivable?
No. The National Historic Vehicle Register says the Petersen’s DeLorean is not currently in running condition. Its total mileage is unknown. It is a museum vehicle, not a working road car.
Is every Back to the Future DeLorean at the Petersen?
No. The films involved multiple cars and related vehicles, and replicas are distinct from the screen-used hero car on loan to the Petersen. Two examples often confused with it are documented separately:

According to the museum’s account, it later passed through other hands, was acquired by a private collector in 2018, and was converted into a time-machine replica. That account concerns VIN #10902, not the Petersen hero car. Read the museum’s VIN #10902 account.
- Team Fox DeLorean: The official franchise site describes a separate functioning, road-worthy car used for rentals and appearances benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation. It is not the Petersen’s non-running hero vehicle. See the official Back to the Future site.
Can you see it at the Petersen Automotive Museum?
The register says the car is on permanent display at the Petersen, but that does not confirm it will be visible on a particular date or identify its current gallery. Before travelling, check the museum’s current visitor information for display details, hours and admission. The Petersen says it is owned and operated by the Petersen Automotive Museum Foundation.
