The building that stands in for Lumon Industries is Bell Works in Holmdel, New Jersey, the former Bell Labs complex. New Jersey state production records also list Alpine and Middletown as filming locations, and season two added outdoor scenes at Minnewaska State Park Preserve in New York, including the real Awosting Falls. Visual effects changed much of what appears on screen, so the finished images do not show these places exactly as they look in person.

Bell Works in Holmdel: Lumon’s real-world home
Bell Works is the best-documented and most recognizable real location. A New Jersey Department of State notice from April 2021 reported that portions of Severance were filmed there in late March. Apple and ILM later identify the building as the Lumon Industries location. Bell Works is the former Bell Labs complex in Holmdel, so the building’s modernist architecture, which is central to the show’s look, is genuine.

The screen version, however, is heavily shaped by digital work. ILM’s season-two production visual effects supervisor, Eric Leven, said in a 2025 interview: “This is the first show I’ve ever done where it’s nothing but invisible effects.” Across season two, ILM reports roughly 3,500 visual effects shots across 10 episodes. That is an approximate total for the season, not a count of filming locations.
Alpine and Middletown, New Jersey
The New Jersey state production list from 2023 names Alpine, Holmdel and Middletown as Severance production locations, with production months listed as April, May and June. The list identifies the towns but does not connect particular scenes to Alpine or Middletown. Readers should treat them as confirmed production locations without assuming which sequences were shot there.

Minnewaska State Park Preserve and Awosting Falls, New York
ILM’s production visual effects supervisor says season-two exterior scenes were shot at Minnewaska State Park Preserve in New York. The waterfall that marks the arrival at Woe’s Hollow is the park’s real Awosting Falls. For the show, the sequence received a digital winter treatment: ILM added snow and ice effects, and some scenery was replaced or enhanced.
What was changed digitally
The gap between the real places and the screen images is large enough to matter for anyone trying to find them. ILM’s account of the work describes the following changes:

- At Bell Works: adding snow, inserting cars and trees, adding distant mountains and a water tower, changing reflections, and digitally removing nearby houses.
- At Minnewaska: adding snow and ice to the landscape, with some major environmental elements digitally replaced in certain shots.
A snowy, empty vista on screen therefore should not be read as a view of the site as it exists today. Use the real places as starting points, not as accurate reproductions of the finished frames.
Visiting Bell Works
Bell Works’ website invites visitors to come and tour the property and describes it as the real filming location in Holmdel. It also mentions virtual tours for businesses. The site does not, in the information reviewed for this article, promise access to the areas used for filming or describe a dedicated Severance tour. Before planning a trip:

- Check the venue’s current visit and tour information directly, since availability can change.
- Ask whether any public tour covers the building’s exterior or interior spaces, and whether any areas are closed to visitors.
- Do not expect to find the snowy or empty settings seen on screen, because those were produced with visual effects.
Minnewaska State Park Preserve is a public park, but the sources reviewed do not confirm which trails or viewpoints match specific season-two shots. Check the park’s current visitor information before traveling.

The available sources establish the main Lumon building and some outdoor locations, but they do not provide a scene-by-scene map. The New Jersey records confirm that Alpine and Middletown were production locations, yet they do not say which episodes or scenes were shot there. Any claim that a particular scene was filmed in one of those towns would go beyond what the records show.

The 2021 notice dates the Bell Works filming to late March, and the 2023 list covers April through June. Those dates describe production periods listed in those records, not a full filming schedule for the series.
When comparing locations, keep three distinctions in view: the best-known Lumon building versus outdoor landscape locations; New Jersey versus New York; and confirmed location facts versus scenes whose exact site has not been published.
