The latest facility-specific report located, published July 17, 2026, said Joe Exotic—Joseph Maldonado-Passage—had been moved to Federal Medical Center Lexington. The report listed a scheduled release in 2036, but that is not a live check of his Bureau of Prisons record, and release dates can change. In April 2025, Exotic announced that he had married fellow inmate Jorge Flores Marquez; the current legal status of that marriage has not been independently confirmed.

A July 17, 2026, report said Exotic had been moved to Federal Medical Center Lexington. The report attributed notice of the transfer to his official Facebook page; it was not a direct, current check of his Bureau of Prisons (BOP) record. The BOP says locator data is updated daily and covers federal inmates released after 1982. It also warns that release dates may not be current because sentences can be reviewed and recalculated. A locator result reading “Released” or “Not in BOP Custody” does not necessarily mean someone is no longer in any form of criminal-justice custody.
What is Joe Exotic’s prison sentence?
Exotic is serving a 21-year federal sentence. The original judgment imposed 264 months, or 22 years. At resentencing in January 2022, a federal judge imposed a 21-year term after grouping the murder-for-hire counts for sentencing. A July 2026 news report listed 2036 as his scheduled release year; it is a projection, not a guaranteed release date.

What was he convicted of?
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a federal jury found Maldonado-Passage guilty of two counts of hiring someone to murder Carole Baskin, eight Lacey Act counts involving falsified wildlife records, and nine Endangered Species Act counts.
What happened with his Supreme Court case?
In March 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review his case. That left his conviction in place; it was a refusal to hear the case, not a detailed ruling on the merits.

Who is Joe Exotic’s husband?
In April 2025, Exotic announced that he had married fellow inmate Jorge Flores Marquez. Tribune News Service reported the announcement and quoted Exotic’s caption: “Meet my husband Jorge Flores Maldonado.” The different surname forms appear in coverage; the available reporting does not reconcile them through official records. Nor does it independently confirm the marriage’s current legal status or the spouse’s current location.
Exotic’s divorce from Dillon Passage was reported finalized in 2023, so Passage should not be described as his current husband.
