Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) is missing from Chicago Fire Season 13, episodes 6 and 7, and returns in episode 8, “Quickstand.” The show did not explain the two-episode gap in its story, and the available interviews and reports do not confirm a real-world reason for Eigenberg’s absence.
Which Chicago Fire episodes is Herrmann missing from?
Herrmann is absent from episodes 6 and 7 of Season 13. The season has 22 episodes, according to TV Guide’s Season 13 episode guide. Its episode 5 synopsis names Herrmann; the synopses for episodes 6 and 7 do not mention him.

A contemporaneous report published November 13, 2024, also identifies episodes 6 and 7 as the gap and says Herrmann returns in episode 8, “Quickstand” (One Chicago Center).
Does the show explain why Herrmann is gone?

That is different from knowing why David Eigenberg was absent from those episodes in production. The reviewed coverage does not confirm an injury or another off-screen cause. An interview published by TV Insider on November 13, 2024, discusses Herrmann’s captain test and leadership, but does not identify a reason for the gap (TV Insider). Claims that an injury caused the absence should not be treated as confirmed.
When does Herrmann return, and what is his storyline?
Herrmann is back in episode 8, “Quickstand.” The episode guide says he and Mouch prepare for officer exams. That storyline is the context for his return, not an explanation for why he was missing from the previous two episodes.

No. His return in “Quickstand” and his continued advancement story later in Season 13 show that the two-episode gap is not a series departure. By the finale, Herrmann is preparing to take the chief’s test. Showrunner Andrea Newman said decisions involving Herrmann, Pascal, and Mouch come to a head in the finale, as reported by TV Insider on May 20, 2025 (TV Insider).
