As of September 28, 2026, Denise Williams remains in Florida state custody, serving a 30-year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder. Her first-degree-murder conviction was reversed in 2020, but the conspiracy conviction and sentence were affirmed; she was resentenced in 2021 after the murder count was vacated.
Where is Denise Williams now?
Secondary inmate listings place Williams at Florida Women’s Reception Center in Ocala, Florida. That location is not permanent: transfers, custody classifications and projected release information can change. For the current facility and any release calculation, check the live offender record maintained by the Florida Department of Corrections.
She should not be described as serving a life sentence. The controlling judgment is a 30-year term for conspiracy to commit murder, imposed with credit for time served at her 2021 resentencing.
What happened to Mike Williams?
Mike Williams disappeared on December 16, 2000, while duck hunting at Lake Seminole. The Florida First District Court of Appeal’s 2020 opinion describes the state’s theory that Denise Williams and Brian Winchester were having an affair and planned Mike’s killing so they could be together and collect proceeds from his life-insurance policy. That motive is a prosecution theory, not a finding that the appellate court adopted as an independently proven fact.

Why was Denise Williams’s murder conviction overturned?
A Leon County jury convicted Williams in 2018 of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. On appeal, the Florida First District Court of Appeal held that the trial evidence could not legally support treating her as a principal to first-degree murder. The court therefore reversed that conviction while leaving the conspiracy conviction and 30-year sentence in place.
“Because we agree that the evidence presented at trial could not support her conviction for first-degree murder as a principal, we reverse that conviction. Finding no merit in her other arguments on appeal, we affirm her conviction and thirty-year sentence for conspiracy to commit murder.”
Rank #2
The ruling did not erase the conspiracy conviction or declare that the entire case was fabricated. It removed the murder judgment under the principal-liability theory and required the state court to resentence her on the surviving offense.
Case timeline
| Date | Event | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| December 16, 2000 | Mike Williams disappears during a duck-hunting trip at Lake Seminole. | The disappearance becomes the central unsolved event in the later prosecution. |
| 2018 | A Leon County jury convicts Denise Williams of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. | Both counts initially carry the case’s most serious legal consequences. |
| 2020 | Florida’s First District Court of Appeal reverses the murder conviction and affirms the conspiracy conviction and 30-year sentence. | The appellate decision narrows the legally valid conviction to conspiracy. |
| 2021 | Judge Kevin Carroll resentences Williams to 30 years with time served after the murder conviction is vacated. | The sentence continues under the conspiracy count rather than murder. |
| September 28, 2026 | Williams remains in Florida custody. | Her live facility assignment and projected release information must be confirmed through the Florida Department of Corrections. |
What evidence drove the case?
Brian Winchester’s account
Brian Winchester’s confession became a major part of the case narrative. Good Morning America reported in 2025 that Winchester is serving a 20-year sentence for kidnapping Denise Williams. That sentence is for the kidnapping offense, not a murder conviction.

Kathy Thomas’s undercover recording
Kathy Thomas made an undercover recording of Winchester in 2018. Good Morning America identified the recording as crucial, and the documentary’s description says it features that recording along with interviews with officials involved in the investigation. A recording can show what a participant said; it does not by itself change the appellate court’s legal ruling about which conviction the evidence could support.
What is Mr. & Mrs. Murder about?
ABC News Studios describes Mr. & Mrs. Murder as a four-part docuseries about two Tallahassee couples: Kathy and Brian Winchester and Mike and Denise Williams. Its synopsis centers on Kathy’s decision to go undercover and record Brian, then follows interviews with people involved in the investigation.
Rank #4
The series is a documentary reconstruction, while the appellate opinion is the controlling source for the conviction and sentence. The documentary can foreground Kathy Thomas, Brian Winchester, Denise Williams and Mike’s family in ways that differ from the court’s narrower legal question.

| Question | Court record | Documentary or book treatment |
