Was Carolyn’s ring Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s “swimming ring”?
No. The available accounts describe Carolyn’s ring as inspired by, or a copy of, a ring associated with John F. Kennedy Jr.’s mother—not as Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s actual ring.
Vogue, citing Carole Radziwill’s memoir What Remains, reports that Carolyn later described her ring as “a copy of a ring [John’s] mother wore.” Vogue identifies Jackie’s “swimming ring” as a diamond-and-emerald eternity band, a different design from Carolyn’s reported sapphire-and-diamond ring. The exact Jackie ring that may have inspired Carolyn’s remains uncertain; jewelry historian Marion Fasel told Vogue, “I can’t say with certainty which ring was Jackie’s swimming ring.”

The distinction matters: a reported design influence is not proof that John proposed with his mother’s original ring. Vogue’s account supports the former, not the latter.

Vogue reports that John proposed during a fishing trip. His former assistant RoseMarie Terenzio recalled: “He said, ‘I want you to be my partner.’” The same article says Bessette-Kennedy initially asked for time to think. A friend of the George magazine founder told Vogue, “She held the proposal off for about three weeks, which I think just made him all the more intent on marrying her.” These are recollections reported by Vogue, not a documented account of the ring’s later custody.
