Damien Leone says he created Art the Clown in 2006, starting with an image of a clown menacing a woman on a late-night city bus. That is Art’s real-world creative origin—not a confirmed account of the character’s life within the Terrifier story. Leone first put him on screen in the 2008 short The 9th Circle; his fictional backstory has largely remained unexplained.
Who created Art the Clown, and when?
Writer-director Damien Leone created Art. In a 2022 interview with Rue Morgue, he said, “I created Art the Clown way back in 2006.” That date marks the character’s creation by Leone, not a date or event in Art’s fictional biography.
What was the original idea behind Art?
Leone’s starting point was a frightening encounter on public transit: a clown boards a city bus late at night and unsettles a woman traveling alone. A&E, quoting Leone’s account of the idea, describes the scene shifting from awkward, possibly comic behavior into intimidation and aggression. Leone summed up the premise as, “I had this idea of a clown terrorizing a woman on a city bus.”
That compact setup contains a tension that became central to Art: his behavior can look like silent clowning, but the performance turns threatening. The original image was a premise for a horror character, rather than evidence that Art was based on a specific real person.

How did Art move from a short film to the Terrifier series?
Art first appeared as a supporting character in Leone’s 2008 short The 9th Circle, a collection of horror ideas and effects. Leone recalled that viewers singled out the clown and asked to see more of him. He then developed Art further in the 2011 Terrifier short, followed by All Hallows’ Eve (2013) and the Terrifier feature (2016). This progression—from one element in a short to the focus of later films—helps explain why Art’s screen persona feels more developed than a single-scene concept.
Why does Art look and behave differently from Pennywise?
Leone deliberately designed Art as a contrast to Pennywise. In a 2018 Dread Central interview, he said, “I consciously went out of my way to make Art the Clown the complete opposite of Pennywise.” Instead of a colorful, speaking clown, Leone wanted a bald, black-and-white modern slasher figure who stays silent and uses weapons.

Leone also refined Art’s makeup between appearances. In the earlier design, his facial features were more subtle; for the 2011 short, Leone exaggerated them, creating a gaunt, zombie-like face with pronounced cheekbones and sunken eye sockets. The shift helped make the character more visually unsettling and distinct.
Was Art based on John Wayne Gacy or another real clown?
Not according to Leone’s account reported by A&E. Its 2025 article says Leone denied that John Wayne Gacy or famous real-life clowns inspired Art, and instead connected the character’s comic behavior to slapstick. That is a specific attribution to Leone, not proof that no audience member will see other associations in the character.

For Art’s performance, A&E reports Leone describing him as “the bastard child of Freddy Krueger and Harpo Marx.” The comparison conveys a blend of slasher menace and silent-film comedy; it is Leone’s characterization, not an independently established origin story.

Art’s silence is part of the character Leone chose to create, alongside the visual contrast with familiar, talkative clown figures. The cited accounts describe his design and performance influences, but do not establish a detailed canonical explanation for why he is silent.

Leone has also said he wanted to keep Art’s persona obscure rather than explain the monster completely. In a 2018 Dread Central interview, he said, “Not knowing too much seems to add to the creep factor.” So far, the available statements support a clear account of how Leone created Art, but not a settled, detailed biography of who or what Art is within the films.
Will Terrifier 4 reveal Art’s origin?
A 2026 GamesRadar+ report said Leone’s script was close to completion and that he hoped to begin pre-production in spring. The report also said actor David Howard Thornton had been promised an origin story. These are production updates and indications of a plan—not a release date, a confirmation of what the films will ultimately show, or a reveal of Art’s canonical backstory.
