Tuffy, the dog from Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!, was an Indian Spitz named Redo. One account says Madhuri Dixit adopted him after filming; a later report says assistant director Madhukar Sawle owned him and that he died in 2000. Those details conflict, and the reported death year is not backed here by a contemporaneous primary record.
For Dhanno, Basanti’s horse in Sholay, the answer is less certain: the available published accounts identify her role but do not establish where the real horse went after filming. The characters are famous; the animals’ later lives are much less well documented.
What happened to Tuffy, the dog in Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!?
Tuffy was played by Redo, an Indian Spitz. Scroll.in reports that Madhuri Dixit adopted Redo after the shoot. The Times of India repeated the adoption account in 2023, attributing it to Amitabh Bachchan’s account on Kaun Banega Crorepati.
A 2026 TV9 Hindi report gives a different ownership account: it names assistant director Madhukar Sawle as Redo’s owner and says the dog died in 2000. The reports do not establish how their accounts fit together, so it is safer to describe the adoption as a reported claim rather than say Dixit owned Redo throughout his life. The death year is reported, but no contemporaneous primary record confirming it is identified here.

Where did Dhanno from Sholay go?
Dhanno was Basanti’s horse in the 1975 film, remembered for the dramatic escape sequence. Retrospectives establish the character’s role, but the available accounts do not identify the horse’s real name, trainer, later owner, retirement home, death date or burial place. Her post-film fate is therefore undocumented in the sources cited here; a more specific story would be speculation.
Other memorable animal performers
Hindi films have given animal characters memorable names and roles, but a character credit does not necessarily identify the individual animal or preserve a record of what happened afterward.

Later productions discussed by Mid-Day include Entertainment and Yeh Hai Bakrapur. Their inclusion in accounts of animal performers does not, by itself, establish what happened to the individual animals afterward.
Why are the animals’ later lives hard to trace?
In older productions, publicity and credits often preserved the fictional character’s name without recording the individual animal, trainer, owner or what happened after filming. That makes it difficult to connect a familiar screen role to a verifiable biography. Tuffy/Redo illustrates the problem: later reports preserve competing ownership accounts, while the available sources do not include a contemporaneous record that resolves them.

For Dhanno, even basic identifying and after-film details are absent from the available accounts. A vivid role in a famous film is not enough to establish an animal’s identity or fate.

Accounts of current Indian production describe more formal welfare processes than the coercive practices recalled from earlier filmmaking. Mid-Day quotes choreographer Chinni Prakash recalling that he had seen trainers hit and whip animals to make them perform. The same report says animals now need protection from loud noises, explosives and unsafe surfaces, and that VFX can recreate sequences without putting a live animal through them.

Animal adviser Vijay AR, owner of Tamed Pets, told the Times of India: “We make it very clear from the beginning about what the animal can or can’t do so that the animal doesn’t suffer if there are high expectations.” Mid-Day also quotes actor Anshuman Jha describing care for the goat Shahrukh: “We kept a separate room for him. He was cared for much more than anyone else.” These examples illustrate reported practices; they should not be read as proof that every production follows the same standards.
The Times of India reported that modern productions may use animal consultants to source and train animals, explain safe capabilities to directors, arrange permissions, and provide attendants, veterinarians and trainers. The report also describes climate-controlled conditions, fitness certificates, veterinary oversight, pre-shoot permissions and post-shoot certificates, with real animals combined with computer graphics where needed. It says endangered animals are barred.

These are reported counts for that year, not a measure of compliance by every production or a guarantee about any particular film.
