In the story, the two officers lead a team assigned to return the ISS Enterprise to Federation Headquarters, and both are included in the finale’s closing gathering. The official recaps do not explain why their screen time is limited.
Why Detmer and Owosekun feel less visible in Season 5
Season 5 follows Captain Burnham and the Discovery crew as they pursue a mystery tied to an ancient power. That central mission leaves less room for some supporting crew members, including Detmer and Owosekun. Paramount+ lists ten episodes, released from April 4 through May 30, 2024: the Season 5 episode guide. StarTrek.com describes it as the show’s fifth and final season: official series description.

What the story says they are doing
The clearest in-story explanation comes in “Mirrors”: Owosekun and Detmer are assigned to lead a team returning the ISS Enterprise to Federation Headquarters. The episode places that assignment within the season’s ISS Enterprise and Progenitors plot. It explains where the officers’ attention is directed in the story, but it does not establish why the performers have less screen time. See the official “Mirrors” recap.
They remain part of the crew and the finale
The official recap for “Face the Strange” recalls details about both characters: Detmer sits by a window on Deck 6 when she is having a bad day, while Owosekun joined Starfleet after being unable to save a friend when she was 15. Those details affirm that the show continues to treat them as members of the Discovery crew, even when an episode is focused elsewhere. Read the “Face the Strange” recap.
#1 Best Overall
Neither character is wholly absent from the finale. StarTrek.com’s recap names Lieutenant Commanders Joann Owosekun and Keyla Detmer among those in the closing gathering: official finale recap.
What is not known about their reduced screen time
The official episode material establishes their story assignment and confirms their presence in the finale, but it does not give a production-side reason for their limited appearances. It does not say that scheduling, contracts, or a change in creative plans caused the reduction. Without a sourced explanation from the production, those possibilities remain speculation.
