They have not been criminally charged in connection with the case
The same 2025 report says Christopher and Roberta Laundrie have never been criminally charged in connection with the case. This is separate from the civil lawsuit brought by Gabby Petito’s parents.
What happened to the lawsuit against them?
Gabby Petito’s parents filed an emotional-distress lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie and their attorney, Steven Bertolino. The case was resolved through confidential mediation in February 2024. The parties did not disclose the settlement amount or other terms.
In a statement reproduced by Gray News on February 21, 2024, Bertolino said: “Christopher and Roberta Laundrie and I participated in mediation with the Petito family and the civil lawsuit has now been resolved. The terms of the resolution are confidential, and we look forward to putting this matter behind us.”

The FBI’s final investigative timeline says the Laundries reported their son missing on September 17, 2021. On October 20, after water receded in Myakkahatchee Creek Park, they returned to search. An item they found was determined to belong to Brian; investigators then recovered his remains, a backpack, a notebook, and a revolver.
The FBI says the notebook contained statements claiming responsibility for Petito’s death. Florida’s medical examiner concluded Brian Laundrie died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. These official findings describe the search and recovered evidence; they do not establish claims about what his parents knew about Petito’s death.
