Alien: Romulus is set in 2142, between the events of Alien (2122) and Aliens. For the simplest viewing order, watch Alien, then Alien: Romulus, then Aliens. The film was released in 2024, so its release year and its place in the story timeline are different things.
Where the film sits in story order
The 2142 setting and the placement between Alien and Aliens come from Hulu’s chronological guide to the franchise. The studio listing used for this article gives the release date but does not state the setting year, so treat 2142 as the guide’s placement rather than a date printed by the studio.
| Story year | Title | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Not stated in the Hulu guide excerpt | Prometheus | A prequel that comes before Alien in the chronological sequence. The guide excerpt does not give its year. |
| 2104 | Alien: Covenant | A prequel-era story, dated to 2104 by Hulu’s guide. |
| 2122 | Alien | The first film. According to the guide, its story takes place 20 years before Alien: Romulus. |
| 2142 | Alien: Romulus | The subject of this article. It sits after Alien and before Aliens, and Hulu’s guide describes it as a bridge between the two. |
| Not stated in the Hulu guide excerpt | Aliens | Secondary coverage commonly dates it to 2179, but the guide excerpt used here does not state that year. |
Why it works as a bridge rather than a remake
Director Fede Álvarez told the Associated Press that the film is set “around the time of ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens.'” That placement shapes the story. Instead of following the franchise’s established crews, Alien: Romulus follows young adults living in a mining colony who are trying to get away from it. The studio synopsis describes young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station, which puts the film in the gap between the two earlier films rather than retelling either one.
The 20th Century Studios listing credits Álvarez as director and co-writer with Rodo Sayagues, and lists Ridley Scott among the producers. Scott’s name on the credits is a production detail, not evidence that the film continues his earlier storyline.

What Álvarez says about the film’s tone
In the same AP interview, Álvarez described the film this way: “At its core, at its heart, it’s a horror thriller.” That is a comment on genre, not on when the story takes place, so it does not change the 2142 placement.
Story year and release year
Readers often mix up the two dates. The 20th Century Studios listing gives the release date as August 16, 2024. The 2142 date describes the year the story is set. A film released in 2024 can be set more than a century after its prequels and about 20 years after the first film, so the release year tells you nothing about where it fits in the timeline.

Watch-order options
- Simplest order: Alien, then Alien: Romulus, then Aliens. This follows the bridge placement and needs no prequels.
- Full chronological order: Prometheus, Alien: Covenant, Alien, Alien: Romulus, Aliens. The guide excerpt places the two prequels before Alien, but it does not state Prometheus‘s year, so this list is ordered rather than dated for that film.
- The studio listing shows Alien: Romulus on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital. Check the region and format of any edition before buying, because availability varies by country and retailer.
Source notes
- Setting year (2142): Hulu’s chronological guide. Hulu’s page was redirecting to Disney+ at the time it was checked, so the guide’s wording may change.
- Story placement and tone: Associated Press interview with Fede Álvarez.
- Release date (August 16, 2024) and credits: 20th Century Studios film listing.
The dates above reflect the sources as they stood when this article was prepared. If a studio later states a different setting year, the timeline should be revised to match it.
