The answer depends on what “made” means: the character’s earliest documented precursor dates to 1984; the show was previewed on May 1, 1999, and officially premiered on July 17, 1999.
When was SpongeBob first created?
Nickelodeon Animation dates Stephen Hillenburg’s early version of the character to 1984, when he was teaching marine biology at the Orange County Ocean Institute. The network describes “Bob the Sponge” as an early incarnation of the square-pants-wearing character who appeared years later. This is the earliest documented origin in the available account, not the creation date of the finished television series. Nickelodeon Animation’s character history

How did the character become a television series?
Hillenburg developed the project with writer and story editor Tim Hill. In a 2024 Television Academy interview, Hill recalled that Hillenburg brought funny drawings of sea creatures—including a sponge and a starfish—to his house, and that they worked on the idea together. The interview does not specify exactly when this development meeting happened. Television Academy, “SpongeBob at 25: The Origins of Nickelodeon’s Animated Hit”
Why was the name changed?
Tim Hill recalled that the working name was “Spongeboy.” He said the name changed to “SpongeBob SquarePants” because a rock band already had the name Spongeboy. The interview does not date the change, so it should not be assigned a specific year.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why do some pages give a different date?
Nickelodeon Animation’s current page lists the original run as beginning April 1, 1999, but that date conflicts with the network’s stated July 17 premiere and the Television Academy’s account. The page does not explain the discrepancy, so April 1 should not be treated as the series premiere date on the evidence available.
