Olivia Munn said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2023 and underwent a double mastectomy about 30 days after her biopsy. She made the diagnosis public on March 13, 2024—nearly a year later—while describing the treatment and recovery she had kept private.
When Olivia Munn was diagnosed—and when she told the public
The diagnosis and the announcement happened at different times. Munn said her diagnosis came in April 2023. She disclosed it publicly on March 13, 2024, explaining that she had kept the experience private while dealing with treatment and recovery. The Associated Press reported that she had undergone four surgeries in the ten months before the announcement.

Genetic test and risk assessment
Munn said that in February 2023 she and her sister took a genetic test covering 90 cancer genes, and that her result was negative. In April, her gynecologist calculated her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score. TIME reported that Munn described the result as a 37% lifetime risk, based on factors that included family history, age, and having her first child after 30. That was her individual reported assessment, not a general population estimate.
MRI, ultrasound, and biopsy
Munn said the elevated risk score led to an MRI, followed by an ultrasound and biopsy. Reporting on her account said the biopsy found Luminal B cancer in both breasts. Munn described the cancer as aggressive and fast-moving. A negative genetic test did not prevent the diagnosis in her case; her account describes a separate risk assessment that led to further imaging and biopsy.

Treatment details she disclosed
Munn said she had a double mastectomy about 30 days after the biopsy. In May 2024 interviews, she also discussed additional treatment and fertility-related decisions. Those interviews describe what she shared at that time, not her present medical status.
In her March 2024 statement, as quoted by the Associated Press, Munn said: “I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options.”

What is known about her current health
The reporting cited here does not establish Munn’s current medical status or prognosis as of October 8, 2026. Her diagnosis and treatment disclosures should not be taken to mean that she is cured, in remission, or experiencing a recurrence.
