Spoilers for Season 1, Episode 4. In “When the Phone Rings” Episode 4, an ominous call makes Hee-joo abandon her clandestine plan, but her difficult interview with Sa-eon brings them unexpectedly close. The episode’s final reveal sharpens the tension: Sa-eon knows she has been pretending to be mute.
What happens in Episode 4?
Netflix’s official synopsis centers the episode on an ominous call that causes Hee-joo to drop her clandestine plan. She then undergoes a difficult interview with Sa-eon, and the encounter turns into an intimate moment between the estranged spouses. Netflix’s series page describes the 2024 limited series as a story about a rising politician and his nonverbal wife whose strained marriage is disrupted by a kidnapper’s call.
A scene-by-scene recap from Ready Steady Cut adds detail to the interview: Sa-eon has Hee-joo role-play a couples segment. The recap interprets his close attention to her as a mixture of jealousy and developing affection, rather than a straightforward professional exchange.
Why does Hee-joo keep calling?
Hee-joo continues making threatening calls and invokes her sister In-a as a reason she wants a divorce. That gives her calls a personal stake beyond the threat itself: they become part of her effort to push Sa-eon toward separation while concealing what she can do.

The episode sustains uncertainty about how much Sa-eon has pieced together. At the company anniversary event, Hee-joo makes another call from the rooftop while Sa-eon is standing behind her. The recap identifies this as a major scene, placing the threat and the couple’s hidden knowledge in the same tense moment.
What does the ending reveal?
The epilogue reveals that Sa-eon knows Hee-joo has been faking her mutism. This changes the meaning of the interview and the rooftop scene: his attention is not simply directed at a wife he believes cannot speak. The revelation sets up the next episode by leaving open what Sa-eon intends to do with that knowledge and how much else he understands.
