What did Jackie Chan’s father tell him?
In an interview transcript, Chan recalled driving back to his office with his father when the older man turned to him and said he had something to tell him. Chan said his father was almost 80. The disclosure, as Chan recounted it, was that his father had been a spy and that Chan’s original name was not Chan.
Chan’s transcript includes the lines, “My father was a spy” and “My original name is not Chan.” He also recalled his father asking, “Is it Fung.” The transcript renders the family name as “Fong” elsewhere; its wording and spelling are preserved here as recorded. Read the interview transcript.
Was Jackie Chan’s original name Fong or Fang?
The spelling varies by source. The interview transcript uses “Fong,” while Complex’s 2025 account of a later People interview quotes Chan saying “Fang”; Hindustan Times also uses “Fang.” These are source-specific transliterations, so it is more accurate to retain each spelling with its attribution than to present them as identical evidence.

How is the story connected to the documentary?
Complex reported in June 2025 that the conversation prompted Chan to explore his family history and helped bring the story to light in the 2003 documentary Traces of the Dragon: Jackie Chan and His Lost Family. The outlet describes the film as addressing his father’s work as a government spy during the Chinese Civil War, as well as his mother’s life as a smuggler and gambler. The clearest evidence for the moment itself is Chan’s first-person interview recollection: he said the disclosure happened in a car, that his father was nearly 80, and that his father told him about the spy past and the family name. Hindustan Times reported that Chan was in his forties when he learned the secret, while also describing the father’s alleged spy work as connected to the Chinese Civil War. For documentary viewers, the distinction matters: Chan’s account establishes what he says his father told him; reporting about the film supplies broader family-history context, but the sources cited here do not independently corroborate the father’s wartime activities.
