Andor is set in the five years before Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and its final episode ends directly before that film begins. Season 1 covers about one year of Cassian Andor’s life, and Season 2 covers the remaining four years. The only specific chronological marker in the official material is BBY 4, which StarWars.com gives for the opening of Season 2.
How the five years are divided
StarWars.com describes the series as setting its clock back five years from Rogue One, and the show’s two seasons split that span unevenly. The table below shows what the official pages establish for each season.
| Season | Time covered | Structure | Position relative to Rogue One | Official marker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | About one year of Cassian’s life | Not stated in the official pages consulted | About five years before Rogue One (StarWars.com, 2022) | Not stated |
| Season 2 | The remaining four years | Four arcs of three episodes each (Lucasfilm announcement, reported by StarWars.com, 2024) | Ends directly before Rogue One (creator interview) | Opens at BBY 4 (StarWars.com Season 2 cast feature) |
Because the two seasons together cover the full five years, a viewer who watches in chronological order moves from the earliest period of Cassian’s story through to the events immediately preceding the film.
What BBY 4 tells you
BBY stands for “Before the Battle of Yavin,” the reference point Star Wars timeline usage uses for dating events. Season 2’s opening at BBY 4 places it four years before that battle. The cited official sources do not convert BBY labels into calendar years, so the marker is useful for ordering events within the franchise’s own timeline but does not tell you the real-world year in which the story is set.

The official material also does not assign a BBY label to each of Season 2’s four arcs. Readers who see a year attached to a specific arc in a fan source should treat it as unverified unless it is confirmed by StarWars.com or Lucasfilm.

How the creator framed the two seasons
Tony Gilroy, the series creator and showrunner, described the seasons this way: “Season 1 is about the education and radicalization of Cassian, about the making of a revolutionary. Season 2 is…you could call it the ‘Winds of War.'” His description points to a shift in tone and stakes between the seasons, while the chronology itself is set by the duration and placement details above.

- An exact real-world calendar year for the full series. Searches for “what year is Andor set in” return the relative placement of five years before Rogue One, not a calendar date.
- Individual BBY years for each Season 2 arc beyond the BBY 4 opening.
- Any official placement for the series that differs from the five-year, two-season structure described above.
For questions about exact arc dating, the StarWars.com Season 2 coverage and Lucasfilm announcements are the primary places to check for updates.
