Spores first appear in HBO’s The Last of Us in Season 2, episode 5, “Feel Her Love.” They are not part of Season 1. The scene is set on level B2 of the hospital, and the show brings them back for reasons tied to Ellie’s immunity and to Nora recognizing who Ellie is.

Spoiler warning: the rest of this article describes the episode’s reveal.

Where spores appear in the show

Spores show up in Season 2, episode 5, “Feel Her Love.” The episode’s hospital setting is the key location: the discussion in HBO’s companion podcast places the spores on level B2, and says level B1 had none. The companion-podcast discussion does not establish whether level B3 contained spores, so do not assume it did.

The episode’s spore sequence works as both a threat and a story beat. It is not a one-off visual callback. Its job is to answer specific questions the game had already raised, and to put a familiar infection mechanic into a new context.

Why spores were absent from Season 1

Season 1 did not use airborne spores. In a January 20, 2023 interview with The Washington Post, showrunner Craig Mazin said spores could return in a later season as another way the infection spreads. That was a forward-looking comment made before the show’s second season existed. It was not a description of the finished series, and it did not promise a specific episode. Season 2 eventually delivered the return, which is why the spore sequence reads as a deliberate adaptation choice rather than a leftover from the game.

Why the show brings spores back

Neil Druckmann, creator of the game and series co-showrunner, explained the production’s reasoning in HBO’s Season 2 companion-podcast discussion of “Feel Her Love,” published May 12, 2025. He pointed to two functions.

Showing that Ellie is immune

In the game, spores were a way to show that Ellie was immediately immune. The reason is practical storytelling: when she is bitten, the effect of a bite is not visible right away. Druckmann put it this way:

“The function of the spores in the game, why we had them in the game, is we wanted something to show that Ellie is immediately immune because when she gets bitten, you don’t know how.”

The show already had a timing problem to solve. Characters in the series watch to see whether someone turns, and in Druckmann’s account that process can take up to two days for some infected people. He said the spores provide a more immediate demonstration than waiting for that window to close. The “up to two days” figure describes how long it could take some infected people to turn. It is not a general statement about infection timing.

Making Nora recognize Ellie

Druckmann also said the spores help Nora understand immediately that Ellie is the girl she has heard about. The basement reveal does double duty here: it raises the scene’s threat and it carries the story forward through a character’s recognition, not through exposition.

Game and show compared

The television version keeps the game’s mechanic but changes its staging and intensity. The table below sets the two side by side on the points the companion discussion addresses.

Axis The Last of Us Part II (game) The Last of Us (HBO, Season 2)
Narrative purpose Shows that Ellie is immediately immune, according to Druckmann Same immunity demonstration, plus Nora’s recognition of Ellie
Staging Spores used as a game mechanic Introduced in the hospital, on level B2; level B1 had none
Threat level Not stated as a comparison in the companion discussion Creators aimed to make spores more menacing than in the game, per the podcast listing
Timing in the adaptation Part of the game’s story Absent from Season 1; first appears in Season 2, episode 5

What is and is not established

  • Established: spores first appear in Season 2, episode 5, “Feel Her Love,” on level B2 of the hospital.
  • Established: Druckmann gave the immunity and recognition reasons for bringing them back.
  • Established: Mazin’s January 2023 comment about a possible later return was forward-looking, not a summary of the finished series.
  • Not established: whether level B3 or any other hospital level contained spores.
  • Not established: any real-world medical comparison. The spores are a fictional infection mechanic and should be read that way.

The companion discussion of “Feel Her Love” is available through the podcast’s listings on Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. Amazon Music dates the episode to May 12, 2025.

The episode stands on its own for viewers who have not played the game. Druckmann’s explanation makes the reasoning clear without requiring prior game knowledge, though readers who have played The Last of Us Part II will recognize the mechanic and the immunity question it was used to answer.

In short: Season 2, episode 5 is the first and only place in the show where spores appear, on level B2, and the reasons for their return are the immunity demonstration and Nora’s recognition of Ellie.
