There was no confirmed date for Kate Middleton and Prince William’s first outing of 2024 when a report asked the question on January 5. In hindsight, their first joint public appearance that year was June 15, when Catherine joined William and their children for Trooping the Colour.
What was known on January 5?
The January 5 report said the Prince and Princess of Wales were beginning the year out of the public eye. It pointed to their usual reduction in royal duties during the children’s school break; the children were due back at school on January 8. That offered a reason to expect the couple’s schedule to pick up later in January, but it was not an announced appearance date. Source report, January 5, 2024.
Why the expected schedule changed
Catherine was admitted to hospital on January 16 for planned abdominal surgery. Kensington Palace announced the operation on January 17 and said she would be away from public duties while recovering. When was their first joint public appearance?
Catherine joined William and their children at Trooping the Colour on June 15, 2024. The ceremony marks the King’s official birthday, and it was Catherine’s first public appearance of the year. William’s hospital visit was not a public outing
Kensington Palace confirmed that William visited Catherine in hospital on January 18. That was an update during her recovery, not the couple’s first joint public appearance. Kensington Palace confirmation.
Why an event listing was not confirmation
In March, a government event listing publicized Catherine’s possible attendance at Trooping the Colour before Kensington Palace confirmed it. The distinction matters: a listing or report about a possible appearance is not the same as a confirmed royal schedule. Report on the March listing.
