Jimmy Kimmel Live! returned to ABC on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after Disney announced the previous day that the program would resume. ABC had announced an indefinite suspension on September 17. The dates are six calendar days apart, a span contemporaneous reports described as nearly a week—not six full 24-hour periods. The return to ABC’s schedule did not mean every local affiliate aired the show that night.
When did Jimmy Kimmel Live! return?
Disney announced on Monday, September 22, that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would return to ABC the next day. The program was back on the network’s schedule Tuesday, September 23. ABC had announced an indefinite suspension on Wednesday, September 17. The return broadcast date was six calendar days after the suspension announcement date; reports described the interval as nearly a week or just under a week.
Did every ABC station air the September 23 return?
No. The show returned to ABC’s network schedule, but some local affiliates continued to preempt it. Nexstar and Sinclair, two station groups with ABC-affiliated stations, did not initially carry the September 23 return on their affiliates. The Associated Press reported that the groups represented about 25% of ABC affiliates refusing to carry the program at that point. That approximate share describes the initial preemption, not a permanent change to the network schedule.
On Friday, September 26, both companies said their ABC affiliates would resume airing the program that evening. ABC News reported that Nexstar and Sinclair together had around 60 ABC affiliate stations. Thus the network return and the return to those local stations happened on different dates.

Why was the show suspended?
The dispute followed Kimmel’s remarks on his September 15 program about the response to the killing of Charlie Kirk. The Associated Press quoted his monologue and reported on the surrounding remarks. On September 17, ABC announced an indefinite suspension. That day, Nexstar had said it would pull the show from its stations, and FCC Chair Brendan Carr made public comments about possible consequences for broadcasters. The reported sequence places these events in context, but does not establish that any one actor alone caused ABC’s decision.
In a September 17 interview on the Benny Johnson podcast, Carr said: “These companies can find ways to take action on Kimmel or there is going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.” The Associated Press reported the remark. It was a public statement by the FCC chair, not itself a formal FCC action.

What did Disney and the station groups say?
Disney’s explanation for the suspension and reversal was reported by ABC Audio on September 24. The company said it had suspended production “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country” and characterized some comments as “ill-timed and thus insensitive.” On the return, Disney said: “We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.” These are the company’s stated reasons, not independent findings about the remarks or the dispute.
When Nexstar and Sinclair announced on September 26 that they would resume airing the show, Sinclair said its objective had been “to ensure that programming remains accurate and engaging for the widest possible audience.” Nexstar said it remained committed to the First Amendment and to airing local and national news that was fact-based and unbiased. Those statements describe the companies’ explanations for their positions.

These are historical availability statements; they do not establish what is currently in each service’s catalog.
