Their first conversation lasted about 15 minutes, according to a later Congressional Record memorial. Carter remembered an immediate bond, followed by correspondence about peace and world affairs. The connection endured until Mattie’s death at 13 in 2004; Carter delivered his eulogy.
How Carter and Mattie first met
The Congressional Record places their meeting in September 2001, while Mattie was hospitalized. Nurses and staff later recalled that their 15-minute conversation turned to problems affecting developing nations, not Mattie’s illness. Carter’s own account says the meeting was arranged after Mattie, who admired him, asked to meet him. In his eulogy, Carter recalled that the Make-A-Wish Foundation had written to say Mattie had only a few days to live. That was Carter’s recollection of the request, not a medical account of Mattie’s prognosis.
Carter described the encounter as more than a brief meeting: “But we exchanged greetings and formed, I would say, an instantaneous bond of love.” The sentence appears in his eulogy for Mattie, dated June 27, 2004, and delivered at the funeral the following day. What connected them
Their public roles and life stages made the friendship striking: Carter was a former U.S. president and, by then, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate; Mattie was a young poet. But their interests were not opposites. Both cared deeply about peace and international affairs. Carter remembered Mattie as someone who followed world problems closely, and said Mattie shared his joy when he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Carter sent him an inscribed rock from the ceremony because, as he explained, he felt Mattie shared the honor.

Carter said their relationship changed his life “for the better.” He also recalled extensive correspondence on many subjects and said Mattie had sent him a video about Carter’s life that Mattie had made as a child. These details come from Carter’s public account; the private letters themselves are not independently available in the cited sources.
From correspondence to Just Peace
Mattie invited Carter to join him in writing a book already titled Just Peace, Carter said in his eulogy. In a 2006 CNN interview, Mattie’s mother, Jeni Stepanek, described the published Just Peace: A Message of Hope as bringing together Mattie’s essays and conversations, along with a long series of emails between Mattie and Carter across three years. Her description supports the book’s contents; it does not establish that Carter co-authored every part.

Carter also explained how he understood Mattie’s message. In the CNN interview, he said: “I think, for Mattie, peace was not just the absence of war between countries, but it was an inner sense of security, of acceptance of one’s plight with equanimity.” That is Carter’s interpretation of Mattie’s outlook: peace involved how people treated one another as well as relations between nations. The friendship’s final chapter
Mattie died on June 22, 2004, aged 13, according to the Congressional Record and Carter’s eulogy. Carter delivered the eulogy at Mattie’s funeral on June 28. He remembered Mattie not only for his illness, but for his attention to peace, his curiosity about the world and the closeness they had built through conversation and letters.

In the eulogy, Carter quoted Mattie’s words: “I want to be a poet, a peacemaker and a philosopher who played.” He also recalled Mattie saying, “I choose to live until death, not spend the time dying until death occurs.” The quotations reflect Carter’s remembrance of his friend, whose poems and public message gave their connection a life beyond their first meeting.

“Unlikely” describes the contrast in their ages and public lives, not a lack of common ground. Carter had worked on peace through public service and diplomacy; Mattie expressed his concern through poetry, conversation and correspondence. Their first meeting quickly revealed a shared interest in the world beyond themselves. The surviving public accounts show a friendship built not on status, but on sustained attention, common values and an exchange Carter said mattered deeply to him.

For further context on Mattie’s books, the Congressional Record notes that Journey Through Heartsongs reached the New York Times bestseller list in 2002. That is a publication milestone, not a sales total. The Congressional Record tribute provides the dated memorial account.
