Jason Bateman has said he partied during his twenties and stopped drinking in his early thirties. He has not given an exact start date for that period. The word “addicted” goes beyond what the public accounts establish: Bateman has discussed substance use, but the available sources do not verify a clinical diagnosis of drug addiction.

What has Jason Bateman said about his substance use?

In a December 2025 interview with Esquire, Bateman described his twenties as confusing and challenging, involving therapy, self-doubt and “a lot of partying.” He recalled a turning point in his early thirties: “I stopped drinking, married my girlfriend, who’s still my wife, and got Arrested Development.” Read the Esquire interview.

A 2009 TV Guide report on an interview Bateman gave to Details described alcohol alongside cocaine and marijuana. In the account, Bateman said alcohol helped keep him out all night and led to using other substances; he said shutting off drinking was key. The report also said he began attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after his then-girlfriend Amanda Anka left for a vacation. This is a report of his public remarks, not a full clinical or treatment history. Read TV Guide’s 2009 report.

When did the partying happen, and when did he stop drinking?

In a 2022 interview with The Guardian, Bateman connected his career slowdown with staying at parties too long. He said he had lost his place in the business and was trying to regain it toward the end of the 1990s. Arrested Development first aired in 2003. That account gives career context, but it does not establish that his career circumstances caused his substance use. Read The Guardian interview.

Was Jason Bateman clinically addicted to drugs?

The public accounts establish that Bateman has spoken about partying, drinking and using drugs, but they do not establish a clinical diagnosis of drug addiction. In a February 2026 article summarizing a Hollywood Reporter interview, El País reported that Bateman characterized his past as more hedonistic than addicted. That is a reported description, not an independent medical assessment. Read El País’s account.

What has he said about sobriety more recently?

The same February 2026 El País report described Bateman as “Cali sober,” a self-description it presented as avoiding alcohol and hard drugs while continuing marijuana use. Treat that as a dated account of how he described himself, not a timeless statement of his status. CBS News also published a Lee Cowan interview with Bateman on September 14, 2025, and confirms sobriety was among the topics; its public page does not provide a full transcript. See the CBS News interview page.
