When did Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee premiere on ABC?
ABC announced the eight-episode series on 17 July 2024, with its first episode scheduled for Wednesday 14 August at 8:30pm on ABC TV. The announcement also said all episodes would be available on ABC iview. ABC’s 2024 premiere announcement gives the original date and viewing details.
What was the first-season format?
Each episode put four familiar Australian faces through five spelling challenges. The last round decided the winner, who earned a one-way ticket back to defend the title in the next episode. The loser was sent to the “dunce’s corner” wearing a dunce’s hat.
Guy Montgomery hosted the first season, with comedian Aaron Chen as his assistant. The ABC described the challenges as inventive tests intended to befuddle contestants.

Who appeared in the first season?
ABC named Tony Armstrong, Tom Gleeson, Wil Anderson, Urzila Carlson, Geraldine Hickey, Luke McGregor, Peter Helliar, Tim Minchin, Steph Tisdell, Demi Lardner, Nazeem Hussain, Rhys Nicholson and Concetta Caristo among the participants. The release concluded its list with “and more,” so these names are examples rather than a complete cast list.
What inspired the programme?
According to ABC’s announcement, the series was based on a successful New Zealand format and a sold-out Melbourne International Comedy Festival show. ABC credited the programme as a co-production with Kevin & Co.

What happened after the 2024 premiere?
On 1 April 2026, ABC announced a third season: ten episodes beginning Wednesday 29 April 2026 at 8:35pm on ABC TV and ABC iview. Guy Montgomery remained host, while Sam Campbell became the new assistant. ABC said each episode would feature four comedians across five rounds, including new games called “Noah Thing or Two”, “Mixologist” and “Do Feed The Birds.” ABC’s third-season announcement provides those later details.
