Beethoven and Gandhi did not meet. The connection between them was made through French writer Romain Rolland—and, in a quieter way, through Madeleine Slade, the English admirer of Beethoven who became Gandhi’s close associate, Mirabehn. In Sudheendra Kulkarni’s account, the story comes into focus during Gandhi’s 1931 visit to Rolland in Switzerland, when a request for Beethoven followed the daily rhythm of prayer, conversation and spinning.
How Beethoven and Gandhi became connected
Romain Rolland linked the two worlds. The French writer admired Beethoven and wrote about Gandhi for European readers. Kulkarni’s 2020 account also traces the connection through Madeleine Slade, who encountered Beethoven’s music and Rolland’s writing before traveling to India. She arrived at Sabarmati Ashram in November 1925 and became known as Mirabehn, according to Kulkarni.
This was a cultural and personal connection, not a meeting between Gandhi and Beethoven: Beethoven had died long before Gandhi’s visit to Rolland.
Gandhi’s 1931 visit to Romain Rolland
Kulkarni places Gandhi’s visit to Rolland at Villeneuve, Switzerland, in December 1931. He says Gandhi stayed for five days, keeping a routine that included prayer, spinning and long conversations with his host. The account’s final-evening scene brings Beethoven into that setting: after prayers, Gandhi asked Rolland to play.

Kulkarni identifies the requested piece as the Andante from Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, citing Rolland’s diary through the article’s retelling. Rolland’s reported account continues: “I played him the Andante from the Fifth Symphony, and, on Gandhi’s request, returned to the piano and played Gluck’s Elysian Fields from Orfeo, the first orchestral piece and the flute melody.” This wording is quoted from Rolland as presented in Kulkarni’s Scroll.in article; the underlying diary edition has not been independently checked.
What the “music of the spinning wheel” means
The spinning wheel, or charkha, was part of Gandhi’s daily practice and a symbol of work and self-reliance. In this story, its “music” is not literal composed music. It is an image for the repeated sound and discipline of spinning, and for the social ideals attached to the practice.

The Gandhi-focused thematic page mkgandhi.org attributes this sentence to Gandhi: “The music of the charkha murmurs sweetly that we are all one, born to be equal sharers to the goods of the earth with no one higher or wealthier than the other.” The page connects the charkha’s symbolism to equality and shared access to the earth’s goods. Because the original speech citation has not been verified here, the quotation should be understood as Gandhi’s words as quoted by that secondary source.
Two different kinds of music
Beethoven’s Andante is a composed work performed at a piano; the spinning wheel’s “music” is an interpretive name for a repeated practical activity and its ethical meaning. Kulkarni’s image brings them together without treating them as equivalent: Rolland’s piano offers a moment of shared listening, while Gandhi’s charkha represents a daily discipline with social purpose.
