The film was Michael Curtiz’s The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Its fictional frontier kingdom, Suristan, prompted a 1936 review by British officials in Bengal after the Government of India worried that the portrayal could offend Muslim opinion. The reviewers proposed removing the kingdom’s place references and hinting at a Central Asian setting, then reportedly concluded that the film was too far removed from history to be read as anything but a screen thriller. Whether it reached Indian cinemas, and in what form, is not confirmed by the record available today.
Which film is meant
The censorship episode concerns the 1936 Warner Bros. adventure directed by Michael Curtiz. It is not the 1959 film North West Frontier, which is often confused with it because of the shared region and the similar title. The two are treated separately below.
The setting: a fictional kingdom on the frontier
The 1936 film does not depict a real place on the North-West Frontier. It invents the kingdom of Suristan, located in the frontier region and set in the mid-nineteenth century. Its ruler, Surat Khan, is an English-educated amir whose stipend is withdrawn after his father’s death, and he then aligns himself with a Russian representative. An account of the film published by Scroll.in on 17 August 2020 describes this plot and setting, and it is the most direct published treatment of the 1936 review that this article relies on.
What the censors objected to
The concern was not the battle sequences or the British heroics. It centred on the name Suristan and on the way the kingdom was presented as a thinly veiled Afghanistan. Officials feared that Muslim audiences in India would read the portrayal as an insult to Afghans and to Muslims more broadly.

The Scroll.in account reports that officials interpreted the name Suristan as meaning “land of the swine.” That is the account’s report of how the name was read by officials, not an established linguistic fact, and it should be read as such.
The review also needs its wider context. The same account links the concern to the 1936 Arab revolt in Palestine and to calls for Muslim unity reported in Star of India, a newspaper aligned with the All-India Muslim League. Presented as background, this places the anxiety about Muslim sentiment in a politically charged year. It does not show that the revolt caused the review.

The proposed fix: change the place, keep the plot
RT Peel, one of the two Bengal reviewers, recommended what he called a “wise precaution.” The recommendation was to remove geographical references to Suristan from the film and to suggest subtly that the action took place in Central Asia rather than on the North-West Frontier.
The proposal was narrow. It targeted names and the implied location, not the plot, the characters, or the film’s action. That distinction matters for understanding what the censors were trying to solve: the concern was that a real Muslim-majority region would be identified with the story’s villainy, and moving the setting away from the frontier was meant to separate the entertainment from that identification.

How the reviewers judged the film
Peel and Colonel Lumby reportedly dismissed the concern. According to the Scroll.in account, they wrote that the film was “so far removed from history that it was impossible to view it in any other light than as a screen ‘thriller’…Viewed in that way, it is a remarkably good film.” The phrasing is quoted in that account. The underlying correspondence has not been checked here, so the quotation should be treated as reported rather than independently verified.
In other words, the reviewers did not reject the proposal on the grounds that the film was harmless to Muslim sensitivities. They judged that its fantastical nature made a historical reading implausible, which is a different argument from the one Peel had made about the place names.

Was the film shown in India?
The record does not settle this. The Scroll.in account infers from the archive file’s apparent closure that the film may have been shown in Indian theatres, possibly without the proposed edits. That inference is not confirmed by the correspondence the article itself draws on. The West Bengal State Archives file and the original correspondence have not been examined in the sources available for this piece.
Until an archival check shows otherwise, the accurate description is that the film was reviewed, that edits were recommended, and that the outcome in Indian cinemas is unresolved. It should not be described as a confirmed ban, a confirmed cut, or a confirmed release with edits.

Not the 1959 North West Frontier
The 1959 film is a separate production. A scholarly study titled “Domesticating the Frontier,” held in the University of Huddersfield repository, places the film in the tradition of imperial adventure imagery and states that there is no evidence it was ever shown in India. The table below compares the two films on the points readers are most likely to confuse.
| Point | The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936) | North West Frontier (1959) |
|---|---|---|
| Release year | 1936 | 1959 |
| Frontier setting | Fictional kingdom of Suristan, mid-nineteenth century, presented as a thinly veiled Afghanistan | Imperial frontier adventure; the scholarly study does not establish a specific fictional kingdom |
| Indian censorship episode | Reviewed in 1936 by Bengal officials for the British Board of Film Censors at the Government of India’s concern; edits recommended | Not stated in the scholarly study as a censorship case |
| Evidence of screening in India | Not confirmed; the Scroll.in account (17 August 2020) infers a possible screening | No evidence that it was shown in India, according to the University of Huddersfield study (“Domesticating the Frontier”; study date not stated here) |
Any reference to “the North-West Frontier film that ran into trouble in India” should therefore be read as the 1936 Curtiz film. The 1959 title has no documented role in this episode.
