Audience interest led Leone to give Art a starring role in a second short, then bring him into the 2013 anthology All Hallows’ Eve and, eventually, the Terrifier feature films. That creative history is documented; Art’s fictional origin remains deliberately unexplained.
Who created Art the Clown?
Filmmaker Damien Leone created Art, including his original visual design. Leone has said that from the beginning he pictured the character in black and white and intended him to remain completely silent. His design for The 9th Circle emphasized a gaunt face, pointed nose and chin, and yellow teeth. For the later Terrifier short, he created a new, more zombie-like face with rotten dentures. Leone discussed the character’s creation and design with Daily Dead.
Art the Clown’s screen history
The 9th Circle: a brief first appearance
Art first appeared in Leone’s short film The 9th Circle. In it, he abducts a woman at a train station and delivers her to a satanic cult. Leone estimated that Art had about four minutes of screen time. He had not set out to make the clown a lead villain, but felt the scene suggested more could be done with him.
Terrifier: the audience response becomes a second short
After viewers responded to Art and asked to see more, Leone made a second short, titled Terrifier, with Art as its sole antagonist. This gave him room to develop Art’s sadistic humor and his habit of playing with victims. In a 2022 AMA, Leone identified the short as the third segment of All Hallows’ Eve. His AMA provides that clarification.

All Hallows’ Eve: shorts within an anthology
Producer Jesse Baget had seen The 9th Circle and Terrifier online and asked to incorporate them into an anthology. Leone persuaded him to let Leone direct the project. Released in 2013, All Hallows’ Eve brought those shorts together with additional anthology material. It is an important part of Art’s production history, but it is an anthology containing the early shorts—not simply another name for the later feature-film series. A&E’s retrospective outlines the sequence and the transition to the features.
The feature films
The feature-film era began with Terrifier in 2016. A&E reports that Mike Giannelli played Art in the shorts and that David Howard Thornton took over the role for the feature. The change marks a shift from Art’s brief appearances in short-film and anthology contexts to his position as the central slasher of a feature series.

What is Art’s fictional origin?
The films’ production history is clearer than Art’s in-universe biography. Leone has described the creative seed as an image of a clown silently intimidating a woman on a late-night bus, with the unease escalating into aggression. That is an account of how the idea began, not evidence that the bus scene happened in Art’s fictional life.
Leone has said he wants to explore a larger story after writing Terrifier 2, while also valuing the character’s mystery. The available reporting does not give a definitive account of where Art came from or explain his nature. In a 2022 interview, Leone said preserving that mystique mattered even though audiences were eager to know more. GamesRadar reported on Leone’s comments about balancing an origin story with that mystery.

Will Terrifier 4 reveal Art’s backstory?
GamesRadar reported on February 25, 2026, that Leone said the Terrifier 4 script was close to completion and that he hoped to begin pre-production in spring. The report describes a development update and Leone’s intention to explore Art’s backstory; it does not establish that filming began, give a release date, or reveal what the origin story will contain. Whether the film will provide a complete explanation remains unsettled.
