In Welcome to Derry, the box belongs to Dick Hallorann and works as a psychic container for the terror, fears and nightmares he locked away as a child. Pennywise pries it open in a vision in season 1, episode 5, “29 Neibolt Street,” and the episode ends with the box open. The Doctor Sleep connection is the mental lockbox technique Hallorann later teaches a young Dan Torrance. This article explains the reveal, so spoilers for that episode follow.
Where the box appears in Welcome to Derry
The reveal comes in season 1, episode 5, “29 Neibolt Street.” In a vision, Pennywise appears in the form of Hallorann’s grandfather and pries the box open. Coverage published in late November 2025 describes the episode as ending with the box open, so the consequences of that moment are left for the rest of the season to handle. An episode discussion transcript from the same period captures the question many viewers asked in plain terms: “What’s in the box?”
What the box contains, according to Chris Chalk
The clearest explanation comes from the actor Chris Chalk. SlashFilm, in an article dated November 26, 2025, reproduces his comments from an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The original interview page was not accessible while this article was prepared, so the wording below follows SlashFilm’s reproduction:
“It’s everything he’s ever been afraid of since he was a kid. My mother would hate that I’m saying this, but I’m going to say it anyway. The way she handles stress is she sips it and squishes it down. You can even hear it in how she talks. She squeezes her throat when she gets very upset because she’s squished so much trauma down. But Dick, instead of squishing the trauma down, he’s locked it all up in this psychic box that he can protect.”

“So, the box contains literally every one of his nightmares, and they’re not happy with him. If you engage these f****** things, they’ll come for you.”
A second version of the same explanation appeared in a ScreenRant article dated November 25, 2025, republished by Head Topics, which cites Chalk’s remarks from Decider. In that version, Chalk describes Hallorann putting away “all the terror that he has ever seen,” and says the trapped entities do not want to stay trapped. The wording differs from SlashFilm’s version, so the first quotation above is the more reliable text.

Taken together, the explanation establishes three things:
- The box is psychic, not a physical object.
- Its contents are fears and nightmares, described broadly rather than as a complete list.
- Pennywise’s opening of the box releases what Hallorann had been holding back, exposing him to it again.
The Doctor Sleep connection
The link to Doctor Sleep, Stephen King’s sequel to The Shining, is the lockbox technique. In that story, Hallorann teaches young Dan Torrance to use a mental box to put away hostile ghosts and frightening experiences. Coverage of the Welcome to Derry reveal points out that Hallorann had a box of his own from childhood, which gives the technique an origin inside the prequel. That is a concrete bridge between the two stories in idea and character.

The bridge is narrower than a full continuity claim. The available reporting does not establish that every version of IT, The Shining and Doctor Sleep shares identical on-screen details about the box, and it does not specify every entity inside Hallorann’s box.
Comparing the two uses of the box
The useful comparison is not between two products but between two uses of the same idea: Hallorann’s childhood containment in the prequel and the technique he passes to Dan in the sequel story.
