Spoilers through the Season 3 finale. Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s relationship grew from a wartime alliance into a kiss and a meaningful romantic connection, but it ends in a political rupture: Rhaenyra expels Mysaria and aligns herself with Daemon. Emma D’Arcy and co-creator Ryan Condal describe that break as part of Rhaenyra’s turn toward harsher rule, not proof that the earlier intimacy was false.
How Rhaenyra and Mysaria became close
During Season 2, Mysaria becomes an ally and confidante to Rhaenyra as the war intensifies. In Episode 6, after Mysaria shares traumatic experiences, the two embrace and kiss.
The kiss was not scripted as a kiss from the beginning. Sonoya Mizuno, who plays Mysaria, said the script called for a moment of breath before an interruption. Emma D’Arcy suggested that Rhaenyra hold and comfort Mysaria; Mizuno said the move from that embrace to a kiss felt organic. That account makes the scene’s intimacy an outgrowth of vulnerability, rather than a planned romantic beat from the outset. Mizuno told TheWrap, “It wasn’t scripted as a kiss.”
What the kiss meant to each actor
Mizuno describes Mysaria’s motives as layered. In the immediate situation, she saw Mysaria as an opportunist trying to draw Rhaenyra back toward their cause while Daemon was away. Mizuno also said she believed Mysaria had genuine feelings for Rhaenyra, and that Mysaria sees herself as fighting for the smallfolk. Those are the actor’s readings of the character, rather than a definitive statement of Mysaria’s private motives.

D’Arcy, Rhaenyra’s actor, described Mysaria as “maybe the first truly romantic connection” for Rhaenyra. In D’Arcy’s interpretation, Mysaria opens Rhaenyra’s eyes to hardships she has not personally experienced, while Daemon represents power and domination. D’Arcy discussed the contrast with the Los Angeles Times.
Why Rhaenyra expels Mysaria in the Season 3 finale
By the finale, D’Arcy calls Mysaria a conscience-like presence for Rhaenyra. “Mysaria, I think, is sort of her conscience,” D’Arcy told TheWrap. Condal, the show’s co-creator, connects Mysaria to some of Viserys’ philosophy and Daemon to a more uncompromising, dragon-led route to power. He says Rhaenyra casts Mysaria out and sides with Daemon because she believes that choice will help her appear legitimate and retain control.

The result is a break with political and moral weight: Rhaenyra chooses the path she thinks will secure her rule over the counsel associated with conscience and Viserys’ ideals. The actors’ and creator’s comments support reading the expulsion as part of Rhaenyra’s hardening, rather than as a simple reversal of the kiss. The exact private motives behind the decision remain open to interpretation.
