After breaking out in Election and American Pie in 1999, he had a less visible stretch in theatrical films, while continuing to work in television and independent movies. More recently, he played Bill Townsend in Netflix’s Sweet Magnolias and appeared in the 2025 Netflix film Fear Street: Prom Queen.
How Chris Klein became famous
Klein was a student at Millard West High School in Omaha when a drama teacher introduced him to director Alexander Payne. Payne cast him opposite Reese Witherspoon in Election, released in 1999. That same year, Klein played Chris “Oz” Ostreicher in American Pie, the role that made him widely recognizable. The Los Angeles Times’ 2016 profile described the early part of his career as a run of all-American-jock roles.
He returned as Oz in American Pie 2 and American Reunion. Between and beyond those franchise films, he continued acting in projects including Here on Earth and We Were Soldiers. The titles and release dates are listed in Rotten Tomatoes’ Chris Klein filmography.
Why it seemed as if he had disappeared
Klein’s visibility in wide theatrical releases fell after his early success, but that was not the same as leaving the profession. In 2016, the Los Angeles Times reported that he had gone six years without a wide box-office release outside the American Pie franchise. The article also noted his 15-episode stint on FX’s Wilfred and work in a Lifetime movie. That is a dated snapshot of his theatrical profile, not evidence that he stopped working.

Klein told the newspaper that some of his films had not met expectations and that he had gone through a challenging period. The report also covered personal setbacks and recovery: it said he had been arrested twice on suspicion of drunk driving, entered rehabilitation in 2010, and told the paper he had been sober since age 31. These details are part of his history, but the reporting does not establish that they alone explain the shape of his career.
In the same interview, Klein described his effort to change and get healthy: “I didn’t want to behave the way that I was behaving, so I made a conscious effort to change and better myself.” He also described the persistence acting requires: “You keep grinding. You keep searching and you keep trying. You only fail if you quit.”
