Filming Yellowstone Season 5B without Kevin Costner was both a practical adjustment and an emotional turning point, according to cast members and director Christina Alexandra Voros. Luke Grimes said Costner’s absence made the season feel like the moment the cast had to “land this plane now for real”; later, he also called it the easiest season they had filmed, saying some conflict had gone with Costner. Those comments describe different aspects of the experience, not a single cast-wide verdict.
What changed when Kevin Costner did not return?
Costner, who played family patriarch John Dutton, did not return for the second half of Season 5. E! reported that he had exited midway through the fifth season as the remaining episodes approached their November 10, 2024 premiere. The change was not simply a cast member missing from set: John Dutton’s place in the family’s story was central to how the series had been built.
Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton, told Us Weekly in a report based on his People interview that Costner’s non-return brought home the season’s finality: “Him not coming back felt like, ‘Okay, we’re going to have to land this plane now for real,’” he said.
Grimes also said the family’s story had always been moving toward the question of what the Dutton children would do without their father. “I think the patriarch leaving was always going to be part of the story,” he said. Costner’s absence, then, felt disruptive to the working environment and familiar ensemble while also connecting to a central idea in the drama.

Why Grimes described the season as both different and easier
In November 2024, Grimes described Costner as an icon and said it felt different not having him on set, while also emphasizing the closeness of the ensemble. “He’s a big presence, man, guy’s an icon,” Grimes said. “So not having him around to set felt a little different. But as always, I mean, we’re a big family now.” The Independent also reported his reflections on filming without Costner, citing the People interview.
A month later, Grimes offered a less wistful description of the filming experience. In an interview with Esquire reported by TV Insider on December 14, 2024, he said Costner’s absence meant some conflict was gone. “Not pointing any fingers, but it was actually the easiest season we’ve filmed,” he added.

The remarks need not cancel each other out. Grimes’s earlier comments addressed the emotional weight of losing Costner’s presence and the feeling that the series was reaching its end. His later comment was about the experience of filming and the reduction of some conflict. Neither statement establishes a single view shared by the entire cast, and Grimes did not elaborate in the reported remarks on the nature of that conflict.
How the production handled Costner’s absence
Director Christina Alexandra Voros, who directed the Season 5B premiere, told TheWrap that the production had practical realities to address because Costner was not there. She also said those considerations were already in place as creator Taylor Sheridan wrote the season. “That being said, I think those considerations were already in place as Taylor was writing,” Voros said.

Voros’s account distinguishes production adjustments from the story’s direction as she understood it. It supports saying the team had to adapt to Costner’s absence; it does not show that every production or story decision was unaffected by it.
For Voros, completing the show also meant closing a long-running shared chapter. She described the finish as bittersweet because it was definitively the end of something for people who had spent years working together on set.

How other cast members described the ending
As Season 5B approached, Kelly Reilly said a positive experience on the show and the possibility of future stories did not mean the current story should not end. She said any continuation would have to be right. Grimes and Cole Hauser likewise said Taylor Sheridan’s involvement would matter to them if more stories were made. Those were personal views expressed in November 2024, not confirmation that a continuation had been commissioned.
Kelsey Asbille, who plays Monica Dutton, said she was excited to see how the ending came to life and called it “a perfect ending.” Her reaction illustrates that cast members could feel attached to the series while welcoming the conclusion of this chapter.

What the interviews do—and do not—establish
The interviews present a mixed but coherent picture: Grimes felt the absence of an iconic co-star and the finality of the story, while later acknowledging that filming was easier in one respect. Voros described both production adjustments and the emotional closure of finishing. These are attributed recollections, not proof of every behind-the-scenes cause of Costner’s departure.
The phrase “I was a mess” is not substantiated by the cited interviews as an exact quotation, and no speaker for it is established here. It should not be attributed to a Yellowstone cast member on the basis of these accounts.
