What Year Does Gen Z End? There Is No Settled Cutoff

Gen Z is often described as people born from 1997 to 2012, but 2012 is a convention—not a universally settled cutoff.

There is no universally agreed year when Gen Z ends. The often-used range is 1997–2012, but it is a convention, not a definitive cutoff. Pew Research Center’s 2019 analysis identifies 1997 as the start of the generation; it does not set a final Gen Z birth year.

Why 2012 is often given as Gen Z’s last year

The Library of Congress’s generations guide summarizes Pew’s range as 1997–2012. That makes 2012 a familiar answer in reference material, but it should be described as a commonly used convention—not a universal or official end year.

Pew’s own 2019 explanation draws a different, narrower conclusion: it chose 1996 as the last Millennial birth year and described people born from 1997 onward as part of the next generation. It did not establish 2012, or another year, as Gen Z’s final birth year.

What Pew says about generational boundaries

Pew explains that it chose 1996 to keep the Millennial cohort analytically useful and to begin examining what might distinguish the next group, including the formative social, political, economic and technological experiences of people born from 1997 onward. The explanation concerns U.S. cohort analysis, not a legal, scientific or worldwide standard.

Pew also cautions that generational cutoffs “aren’t an exact science.” It says there is no agreed formula for how long a generation should be, and that later-generation boundaries do not have the definitive thresholds associated with the Baby Boom. Experiences and attitudes tend to change along a continuum, so the categories can be recalibrated as more data accumulate.

Why people near the boundary may not fit a neat label

Generational labels are tools for describing and comparing groups, not precise descriptions of every person. Pew notes that cohorts often span 15–20 years and can include people with meaningfully different formative experiences; there can also be smaller groups within a generation. Someone born near a proposed cutoff may share experiences with people on either side of it.

For a documentary, demographic study or other analysis, state the range being used and name its source. That makes clear whether “Gen Z” means Pew’s cohort beginning in 1997 or the broader 1997–2012 convention cited by the Library of Congress, rather than implying that a single boundary is settled everywhere.

Bottom line on Gen Z’s last birth year

If you need a simple conventional range, 1997–2012 is commonly cited. If you need the precise answer to whether Gen Z definitively ended in 2012, it did not: there is no universally accepted end year, and Pew’s published boundary-setting establishes a start rather than a final cutoff.
