What Year Did Deepfakes Go Mainstream? Why 2020 Is the Best Answer

Deepfakes first crossed into mainstream culture around 2020, as consumer tools, social platforms, entertainment, and institutional concern converged. Generative AI’s mass-market acceleration came later.

2020 is the strongest answer if “mainstream” means deepfakes moved beyond specialist communities and became recognizable in consumer apps, entertainment, social media, advertising, and public debate. But the timeline has more than one turning point: 2017–2018 brought the term and technique to public attention, while 2023–2024 brought a much broader generative-AI boom and more visible harms.

What does “mainstream” mean for deepfakes?

There is no single launch date. “Mainstream” can describe several different changes: the public recognizing the term, non-specialists gaining access to creation tools, synthetic media circulating as ordinary online culture, institutions treating it as an operational risk, or businesses selling related services. Those thresholds did not arrive in the same year.

Here, a deepfake means media made or altered with AI to imitate or synthesize a person’s face, voice, or performance. The term is also used loosely for fully generated people and other synthetic media. It does not mean every misleading clip: a deceptive crop, conventional edit, dubbed track, or misleading caption can misrepresent a real recording without being AI-generated.

Year What changed
2017–2018 The term and technique entered broader public awareness; a political demonstration made the stakes easier to grasp.
2019 Warnings and demonstrations became more visible, though creation remained less accessible.
2020 Consumer-facing creation, entertainment, social circulation, and institutional concern converged. This is the strongest date for the first mainstreaming.
2023–2024 Generative AI became a mass-market subject, and prominent deepfake-related harms and election cases made the risks more visible.

Before the breakthrough: a tool associated with abuse

Face swaps and computer-generated imagery long predate deepfakes. The word became associated around 2017 with anonymous online users applying neural networks to put people’s faces into pornographic videos, often without consent. Early results were imperfect, but the work showed that identity manipulation was no longer confined to film studios or research labs: consumer hardware and publicly available software could produce a shareable imitation.

The early history matters because it prevents a misleadingly neutral origin story. Deepfake technology became publicly legible in large part through sexual abuse. The harms do not begin only when a celebrity is targeted; private people can also face non-consensual sexual imagery, harassment, impersonation, and fraud.

2018 made the political risk understandable

A widely discussed Obama demonstration, created with filmmaker Jordan Peele, showed a familiar politician appearing to say words he had not said. It was a controlled warning, not evidence of an actual deceptive campaign video. Its significance was explanatory: audiences could see how a convincing audiovisual impersonation might challenge trust in evidence, journalism, and public figures.

The demonstration did not prove that deepfakes could change election results, nor that viewers would routinely believe them. It made a potential capability concrete and helped move discussion from technical novelty to political and institutional risk.

Why 2020 is the strongest “went mainstream” milestone

Creation began to feel consumer-facing

By 2020, face replacement, animation, and image transformation were increasingly available through apps and websites designed for simple experimentation rather than specialist production. The threshold was not perfect realism. It was that a person could make a recognizable synthetic performance and share it without needing a research lab or advanced machine-learning expertise.

MIT Technology Review used the exact framing “The Year Deepfakes Went Mainstream” in an article published on December 24, 2020: its roundup of deepfakes from that year. Academic literature also described deepfakes as having gone mainstream by 2020, while documenting their social, political, and commercial implications (review of deepfake technologies and their implications; scholarly discussion of deepfakes and synthetic media). These sources support 2020 as a defensible milestone, not as a universally agreed date for a sudden transformation.

Synthetic faces entered entertainment and platform culture

Deepfake techniques and adjacent synthetic-media tools appeared in comedy, fan edits, music, advertising, documentary experiments, and performance reconstruction. Social platforms made short, recognizable transformations easy to watch and pass along. Some uses were playful or licensed; others raised questions about consent, deception, and ownership of a likeness.

That range is part of what made the shift cultural rather than only technical. The same broad capabilities can support translation, accessibility, visual effects, training, or historical reconstruction, while also enabling impersonation, harassment, fraud, and non-consensual sexual imagery. The relevant distinctions include authorization, disclosure, purpose, and likely harm—not simply whether AI was involved.

Public concern became institutional

By 2020, platforms, governments, journalists, and researchers were treating synthetic media as a practical concern for elections, public trust, and online safety. The COVID-19 information environment and increased reliance on remote communication sharpened worries about whether audiovisual evidence could be trusted. Concern was warranted, but predictions of deepfakes deciding elections should not be mistaken for evidence that they did.

2021–2022: the creator and commercial phase

As synthetic performance became more platform-native, the discussion broadened from political deception to creators, digital replicas, posthumous likenesses, and commercial use. A widely discussed Tom Cruise impersonation account on TikTok showed how a synthetic celebrity persona could be presented in the familiar style of an ordinary short-video creator, prompting viewers to pause and check who was behind it. The account was not Cruise. The example illustrates the social format’s persuasive power, not proof that viewers broadly mistook it for the actor; legal discussion of digital replicas and posthumous deepfakes provides background on the broader likeness-rights debate.

Commercial uses also became easier to discuss concretely: licensed digital doubles, synthetic presenters, dubbing, localization, and voice workflows can serve legitimate production needs. They are not ethically equivalent to an unauthorized replica or a fabricated statement presented as genuine. Consent, clear disclosure, rights clearance, and meaningful controls over a digital likeness remain central questions.

Why 2023 is a competing answer

2023 is a strong answer to a different question: when did generative AI become a mainstream consumer category? Interfaces for generating text, images, and voices made experimentation more ordinary and expanded public awareness of synthetic content. The distinction is useful: 2020 made deepfakes culturally mainstream; 2023 made generative AI mainstream, greatly widening the set of people who could encounter and create synthetic media.

A year-end account described 2023 as the year AI went mainstream and noted the visibility of AI-generated deepfakes in political and war-related information environments (Euronews retrospective, December 27, 2023). As the tools and formats multiplied, “deepfake,” “AI-generated content,” and “synthetic media” increasingly overlapped in everyday conversation, even though they are not interchangeable technical terms.

Why 2024 is the mass-harm visibility phase, not the origin

Audio made impersonation easier to operationalize

Voice can be cheap to distribute, consumed without close visual inspection, and used to exploit trust in a caller or familiar speaker. The fake audio impersonating Joe Biden in a New Hampshire primary robocall is a prominent example of the later acceleration, not evidence that the phenomenon began in 2024. Reporting on election-related synthetic audio and the robocall provides background on those concerns.

A convincing fake call can create urgency before a recipient has time to verify it. In any real-world case, however, claims about its reach and effect should be separated: circulation is not the same as persuasion, and persuasion is not proof of changed behavior or an election outcome.

Sexual deepfakes exposed the costs of amplification

AI-generated sexually explicit images of Taylor Swift became a high-profile case in 2024. The story was not only about a famous person’s likeness. It highlighted consent, the gendered distribution of sexual abuse, and the role of platforms and search systems in amplifying or limiting material. Creation, hosting, indexing, and redistribution are distinct parts of the problem; a takedown in one place does not necessarily stop copies elsewhere. This article does not link to abusive material.

Election evidence was more complicated than the warnings

In the 2024 UK general election, misleading political content circulated, but deepfakes did not become the defining threat. Full Fact’s review found a small number of prominent examples and concluded that ordinary misleading edits and political spin had greater practical reach than sophisticated synthetic media (Full Fact report on the 2024 UK general election). That evidence does not show deepfakes are harmless; it cautions against treating every manipulated clip as AI-generated or claiming, without evidence, that deepfakes determined an election.

For a particular alleged deepfake, useful evidence includes the earliest known upload, the original file if available, the depicted person’s response, independent forensic analysis, reach, correction timing, and any real-world consequence. If the technique is uncertain, describe it as “widely described as a deepfake” or “appeared to be AI-generated” rather than stating more than the evidence establishes.

What deepfakes changed: trust, consent, and verification

A deepfake need not persuade a large audience to cause harm. A fabricated clip can briefly appear credible, force institutions to spend time authenticating it, or circulate faster than a correction. Once synthetic media is familiar, a person can also dismiss genuine evidence as fake—a risk often called the “liar’s dividend.” The term names a possible tactic, not a universal or inevitable effect.

Detection is not a complete solution. Automated analysis can produce false positives and false negatives, and recompression, cropping, re-encoding, editing, or changing generation methods can complicate assessment. Provenance and authenticated capture, disclosure, platform friction, rapid response, and legal remedies address different parts of the problem; none is interchangeable with a detector.

The most durable distinction is not simply “real versus AI.” Ask whether a likeness was used with permission, whether synthetic elements were disclosed, whether the content is being presented as authentic, who is distributing it, and what harm it could cause. A licensed digital double, a clearly labeled parody, a deceptive impersonation, and non-consensual sexual imagery may use related techniques but are not the same act.

The verdict: 2020 was the first mainstreaming

2017–2018 marks the rise of the term and the public warning; 2019 marks a more visible phase of demonstrations and concern. 2020 is the best-supported answer for the first mainstreaming because consumer accessibility, social and entertainment circulation, commercial interest, and institutional attention converged. 2023 expanded the mass-market reach of generative AI, and 2024 made some harms and election-related examples harder to ignore. Those later accelerations changed the scale and visibility of the issue; they did not erase the earlier threshold.
