Whoopi Goldberg made the remark on ABC’s The View on July 8, 2024, while the co-hosts discussed whether Joe Biden should remain in the presidential race. Her point was not unconditional support: she said Biden’s ability to do the job mattered, and that she would join calls for him to leave if he could not do what was needed in the next debate.
What Goldberg said on The View
In its July 8, 2024, account of the broadcast, TheWrap quoted Goldberg: “I don’t care if he’s pooped his pants. I don’t care if he can’t put a sentence together. Show me he can’t do the job, and then I’ll say OK, maybe it’s time to go.” TheWrap’s report covered the co-hosts’ discussion of Biden’s political future after his debate performance and amid calls for him to step aside.
The phrase was an intentionally blunt hypothetical about an embarrassing moment or verbal stumble. Goldberg said those things alone would not decide her view; her stated test was whether Biden could do the job.
Her support had a condition
Goldberg also made clear that her position could change. TheWrap reported her saying: “So I’m just simply saying, there are two debates. And if he can’t do what he needs to do for the second debate, I’ll join any crew that says get rid of him.” In other words, she did not promise to support Biden regardless of his performance. She identified the next debate as a test and said she would support calls for him to leave the race if he failed it.

Mediaite’s account of the July 8 exchange reports Goldberg framing loyalty around performance: “If you are doing the job, I might not like everything you’re doing. I don’t like it all. But I’m going to stand behind you.” Mediaite’s report provides additional context for the contrast between personal loyalty and her job-performance standard.

The remark belongs to the 2024 campaign debate over Biden’s candidacy, not to a current endorsement. ABC’s July 2024 The View episode archive provides program context. A later ABC listing for “Biden Stands Down: The Race for the White House” states that Biden announced he was withdrawing from the 2024 election and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris.
The available published accounts attribute the quoted remarks to Goldberg’s July 8 broadcast. They do not provide an official, complete verbatim transcript of the exchange, so longer passages should be attributed to the outlet reporting them rather than presented as an independently verified transcript.
