Apple’s own investigation found that the affected celebrity accounts were compromised through targeted attacks on login credentials, not through a breach of Apple’s systems, including iCloud and Find my iPhone. Federal prosecutions later documented phishing-based account theft by individual defendants. Those cases did not establish who published the images, and no official source has produced a verified total of victims or images for the whole incident.
What happened in late summer 2014
In late August and early September 2014, private photographs of several well-known women were posted online without their consent. The material spread quickly across forums and file-sharing sites, and within days the early public explanation was that Apple’s cloud storage service, iCloud, had been hacked. That theory shaped much of the coverage, so it is the first claim to test.
The incident is best understood as two separate events: the unauthorized access to individual accounts, and the later publication of material taken from them. Investigators and prosecutors have treated these as distinct questions, and the record is far clearer on the first than on the second.
Was iCloud hacked?
Apple’s September 2, 2014 finding
On September 2, 2014, Apple said that after more than 40 hours of investigation it had found that certain celebrity accounts were compromised through a targeted attack on usernames, passwords and security questions. The company’s statement, as reproduced by TechCrunch, read: “None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud or Find my iPhone.”

This is Apple’s account of the cases it investigated, and it should be read that way. It describes how the accounts were accessed. It does not speak to every image that circulated, and it was a company statement issued in the first days of the investigation, not an independent audit.
The FBI’s initial response
On September 3, 2014, the FBI said it was aware of allegations of computer intrusions and unlawful release involving high-profile individuals and was addressing the matter, according to a CBS News report from that day. That statement confirmed an active inquiry. It did not describe findings, and it did not say how many accounts were involved.

How the accounts were accessed
The method the federal cases documented is credential phishing: sending messages designed to trick a person into entering a username and password on a fake login page, or into revealing the answers to account security questions. Once an attacker has those details, they can sign in as the account holder without breaking any system. This is consistent with the method Apple described in its September 2 statement.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) later announced two sentencing outcomes that document this method. Both were for unauthorized account access rather than for publication.

| Defendant and release | Plea and sentence | Accounts documented by DOJ | DOJ finding on the celebrity images |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryan Collins, DOJ release dated October 27, 2016 | Pleaded guilty to unauthorized account access; sentenced to 18 months | More than 600 victims identified; at least 50 iCloud accounts and 72 Gmail accounts accessed | No evidence linking Collins to the leaked images, and no evidence that he shared or uploaded the information he obtained |
| Edward Majerczyk, DOJ release dated January 25, 2017 | Pleaded guilty to phishing-related access; sentenced to nine months | More than 300 Apple iCloud and Gmail accounts accessed, including at least 30 celebrity accounts | No evidence that Majerczyk was responsible for the celebrity-photo postings |
Each row describes one defendant’s case. The victim figures come from those case records and are not a combined or incident-wide count. The sources do not state that the two cases’ victims are distinct, so the numbers should not be added together.
What investigators proved, and what they did not
The distinction between theft and publication matters more than any other point in this story. The record supports several conclusions, and it also marks where the evidence stops.

- Established: Some celebrity accounts were accessed without authorization, mainly through phishing, and at least two defendants were convicted for unauthorized account access.
- Established: Apple’s investigation found no breach of its systems in the cases it examined.
- Not established by the cited records: That any convicted defendant published the images. DOJ said it found no such evidence in either case.
- Not established by the cited records: A single method or a single actor behind every posting. Different sources of the images cannot be assumed from the access method alone.
- Not established by the cited records: A final count of affected people, accounts, images or reposts.
Keeping these categories separate avoids the most common error in coverage of this case, which is treating one defendant’s conviction for account theft as proof of who was responsible for the publication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Apple’s 2014 security advice
Apple’s contemporaneous statement advised users to turn on two-step verification, which requires a second confirmation, typically a code sent to a trusted device, before a new device can sign in to an account. That advice was issued in 2014 and reflects the security options Apple offered then. It was not presented as a guarantee against every form of account theft, and the cases above show that credentials can be stolen through phishing whatever the account settings are. The safest reading is that two-step verification was one recommended measure among several, not the whole answer.

What remains unknown
Three questions remain open on the public record. First, the full number of accounts accessed across all activity linked to the period is not stated in any source reviewed. Second, the chain from account access to publication, including how the images moved between sites and forums, has not been established in court findings that the cited releases describe. Third, the number of images and reposts is not stated anywhere in the cited records. Anyone citing a single figure for the whole incident is going beyond what the official record supports.
For readers who want to verify these points, the primary sources are Apple’s September 2, 2014 statement as reproduced by TechCrunch, the FBI statement as reported by CBS News on September 3, 2014, and the DOJ sentencing releases dated October 27, 2016 and January 25, 2017.
Those records answer the question of how accounts were accessed and what prosecutors could prove. They do not answer the broader question of how many people were affected, and no reliable figure for that exists in the public record.
