In “Laszlo’s Father,” the sixth-season episode of What We Do in the Shadows, Laszlo’s estranged father returns as a ghost claiming he wants to make amends. Laszlo doubts his motives, while Nadja and Nandor face a separate problem involving shapeshifters who have moved in next door. The two comic plots sit alongside a quieter question about who belongs in the household.
What happens in “Laszlo’s Father”?
Lord Roderick Cravensworth, Laszlo’s father, returns as a ghost and says he has come to repair their long-troubled relationship. The stated aim does not persuade Laszlo, who remains suspicious of what his father really wants. Meanwhile, Nadja and Nandor deal with shapeshifters living next door, giving the episode a second supernatural conflict alongside the family reunion.

How the ghost story connects to the show’s found family
The father-and-son plot is about a biological relationship that has been damaged and may not be easy to repair. A November 12, 2024 Gizmodo/io9 review also reads the episode through the household’s found-family bonds, highlighting Colin Robinson’s fear that the others might leave him behind. That is the reviewer’s interpretation, rather than a stated explanation from the show’s creators.
That reading puts Roderick’s return in contrast with Colin’s anxiety: one character is unsure whether a strained family tie can be mended, while another worries about losing the unconventional family he has found. The supernatural premise keeps the story comic, but the emotional stakes concern recognition, trust, and belonging.
