The “poop cruise” is the nickname for Carnival Triumph’s February 2013 voyage. An engine-room fire knocked out the ship’s propulsion and other essential systems, and without electrical power its vacuum-flush toilets stopped working. Netflix’s documentary Trainwreck: Poop Cruise revisits the disaster. This article separates what the official investigation confirms, what passengers recalled, and what secondary reporting adds.
What the poop cruise was
Carnival Triumph was on a four-day round trip from Galveston, Texas, to Cozumel, Mexico. Netflix’s official synopsis gives the passenger and crew count as approximately 4,000, and that figure is an approximation rather than a precise count. An engine-room fire damaged the electrical cables supplying the ship, leaving it without power for propulsion, refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning and flushing toilets. The ship was later towed to Mobile, Alabama. The nickname refers to the sanitation failure at the center of the story.
How the voyage unfolded
- The fire. An engine-room fire damaged the electrical cables that supplied the whole ship, and the ship lost propulsion and drifted.
- The power loss spread. Refrigeration, lighting, air-conditioning and flushing toilets stopped, according to Netflix’s synopsis.
- The toilets failed. The Bahamas Maritime Authority’s investigation report records passenger accounts of sewage overflowing from toilets after power was lost.
- Passengers were told to improvise. The same report records instructions to urinate in showers and to use red biohazard bags for solid waste.
- Water and food ran short. Passenger Kim Ware described intermittent water in her Senate testimony, and Netflix’s synopsis says food supplies dwindled.
- The tow. TIME reports that the ship reached Mobile after about four days of drifting.
Why the toilets stopped
The investigation report describes the design in plain terms: “The sewage system on the Carnival Triumph, as with most passenger vessels, is a vacuum flush system that is electrically powered.” A vacuum system needs electricity to move waste, so a loss of power halted normal flushing. The failure was therefore a direct result of the fire’s damage to the power supply, not a separate fault in the toilets themselves.
The bin photographs: a correction that matters
Photographs of bins in a bar area were widely read as evidence of sewage leaking from overhead. Investigators traced the water in those bins to a machinery space that flooded when fire sprinklers activated. They also found no sewage piping in the overhead above those bins. This corrects the specific claim those photographs were used to make. It does not change the separately documented toilet overflows and sanitation failures.

What passengers described
Kim Ware, a passenger, gave testimony at a U.S. Senate hearing titled The Status of the Cruise Industry: An Update, published December 3, 2014. Her statement includes the line: “The passengers of the Carnival Triumph would be adrift at sea for 4 days, living in horrendous conditions.” She described the loss of power, intermittent water, and red bags used in place of working toilets. Her testimony conveys what the experience was like for one passenger. The technical findings come from the investigation report.
The documentary also includes passenger and crew interview clips. This article quotes only statements that appear in the cited reporting or official records.
