The Great Irish Famine, known in Irish as An Gorta Mór or the Great Hunger, was the catastrophic crisis of 1845–1852 in which potato-crop failure brought hunger, disease, mass death and a surge in emigration. It was not simply a story of a crop failing: the disaster struck a society where many poor rural people relied heavily on potatoes and had little protection against losing that food. The famine accelerated migration already underway, separated families and helped establish Irish communities abroad that supported later migrants.
What was the Great Irish Famine?
The Great Irish Famine is generally dated from 1845 to 1852. The National Archives of Ireland describes its impact as devastating and preserves records that show both local distress and efforts to organize relief. The crisis brought together crop failure, hunger, disease, death and large-scale departure from Ireland; no single one of those outcomes captures its full effect.
Potatoes were a major part of the diet for millions of rural people, and the loss of the crop could therefore become a threat to survival rather than merely a poor harvest. President Michael D. Higgins’s 2023 National Famine Commemoration speech describes approximately 1.5 million landless labourers as virtually totally dependent on potatoes, and a further three million rural poor as having potatoes as a major dietary component. Those figures convey the scale of dependence cited in the speech; they should not be read as a precise census of everyone affected.
Dependence on one staple made crop failure especially dangerous for people with little reserve. The famine exposed and intensified existing poverty and vulnerability. The evidence here establishes that context, but does not settle the relative responsibility of blight, landholding arrangements, British policy or particular relief decisions. Assigning precise causal shares would overstate what these records and summaries can demonstrate.

How did crop failure become a humanitarian disaster?
Food dependence and poverty
The consequences of a failed crop varied by social position. In his 2023 speech, Higgins emphasizes that An Gorta Mór and the emigration associated with it affected Irish social classes differently. A household with alternative resources did not face the same choices as a landless labourer whose food supply depended heavily on potatoes. That uneven exposure helps explain why a crop crisis became a wider social catastrophe.
Relief and the records of distress
The National Archives of Ireland’s Distress Papers include reports about community distress, letters concerning relief committees, applications for funds and correspondence about projects financed through famine relief. These documents can show what local communities asked for and how administrative relief was handled. They are situated records, however: a petition or official report represents a particular purpose, place and moment, not a neutral count of every person who suffered.
For historians and family researchers, the papers offer a way to move from broad totals to specific communities and relief efforts. A local appeal may identify an area in acute need or describe a proposed project, while correspondence can show how requests were processed. Such records are evidence of documented distress and administration, not a complete map of the famine’s human toll. The National Archives’ guide to Famine Records and Distress Papers describes the collection.
How many people died or emigrated?
There is no single famine-era emigration total that answers every version of the question. The figures below refer to different periods and measures. They overlap, so they must not be added together. President Higgins’s 2023 commemoration speech is the source for the estimates and figures in the table.

| Period or measure | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Deaths during the famine | About one million | An estimate reported in President Higgins’s 2023 speech, not an exact count. |
| Emigration during the immediate famine period | About one million | An estimate reported in the same speech; its period and definition differ from the longer departure totals. |
| Permanent departures, 1845–1855 | 1.5 million | A census-based figure reported in the speech for people who left for good over this longer span. |
| Overseas emigration, 1841–1850 | 1.3 million | The speech’s total for overseas emigrants during a period that includes years before the famine. |
| Destinations of the 1841–1850 overseas emigrants | 70% United States; 28% Canada; 2% Australia | Destination shares reported in the speech for that overseas-emigration figure. |
These figures describe distinct windows and categories: an estimate for immediate-period emigration, a longer count of permanent departures and a total for overseas emigration across 1841–1850. The differences are not contradictions that can be resolved by summing the numbers. In particular, the 1841–1850 figure begins before the famine’s 1845 start, while the 1845–1855 figure extends beyond its 1852 end.
Emigration also did not begin in 1845. The famine intensified movement that already existed and made leaving a continuing strategy for many families. Higgins’s speech describes younger family members departing and diaspora communities helping relatives and neighbors follow. This pattern matters as much as the headline total: migration could become a chain, with earlier arrivals creating connections for those who came later.
When did emigration peak, and where did people go?
Higgins’s 2023 speech gives an annual outline that shows the sharp rise and continued movement. It reports 100,000 emigrants in 1846, a peak of 250,000 in 1847, an average of 200,000 annually for the following five years, and 70,000 in 1855. These are figures reported in the speech; the five-year average is not a separate count for each year, and the 1855 figure falls after the famine’s commonly used 1845–1852 date range.
For the broader 1841–1850 overseas total, the speech reports that 70 percent went to the United States, 28 percent to Canada and 2 percent to Australia. The United States was therefore the leading destination in that reported distribution, but it was not the only one. These percentages apply to overseas emigration in that period, not to every famine-era migrant or every kind of departure.

Higgins’s speech also reports that most emigrants paid their own fares. It gives fares of about 55 shillings to Canada and 70–100 shillings to the United States. Those figures are the fares cited in the speech; they do not establish what every passenger paid or account for individual circumstances. The lower stated fare to Canada did not mean the journey was safer.
What were the voyages like?
Danger on the Atlantic routes
A National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) article published in 2017 reports an estimate that one-third of Canada-bound passengers died during the voyage or shortly after arrival, compared with 10 percent on U.S. ships. These are attributed estimates, not universal mortality rates for every ship, route or migrant. The comparison also includes deaths shortly after arrival for the Canada-bound figure, so it should not be treated as a count of deaths at sea alone.
That distinction changes how the numbers should be understood. A passenger could survive the crossing and still die soon after reaching land; a voyage account that counts only deaths aboard ship would measure something different. The available estimate indicates severe danger on the Canada-bound route, but it does not establish an individual passenger’s odds or explain all differences among ships and conditions.
What one passenger database can—and cannot—show
NARA’s Famine Irish Passenger Record Data File contains records of more than 410,000 Irish passengers arriving in New York between January 1846 and December 1851. The database includes 8,075 births at sea. Those figures make it a substantial record of arrivals at one port over a defined period, rather than a complete register of Irish emigration.

NARA cautions that the database may contain errors and may reflect some of the healthier crossings. It should therefore be used as an archival dataset with limits, not as a complete count of emigrants, a count of all arrivals in North America or a reliable measure of total deaths. The article, “Ireland’s Famine Children ‘Born at Sea’”, explains the database and voyage context.

Leaving could mean escaping hunger, but it could also mean separation from parents, siblings and neighbors. Emigration dispersed families across the Atlantic, sometimes leaving people unsure where relatives had gone or whether they had arrived safely. The famine’s demographic rupture came from both death and departure, not from migration alone.
A Boston Pilot “Missing Persons” notice dated 28 November 1846 gives a glimpse of that uncertainty. Reproduced in a 2023 speech by President Higgins, it seeks Patrick Curtis, who had emigrated from County Clare and was last reported seen in Boston. The notice reads: “Of Patrick Curtis, who emigrated from county Clare, parish of Ogoneloe, last spring, and left his parents and family in Cabotville, MS, 11th of September last, and has since been seen in Boston.” It is a historical notice seeking a particular person, not a complete account of his fate or a representative record of every migrant.
Such searches make the human consequences visible at a scale that totals cannot: relatives were separated, information was incomplete, and finding someone could require public appeals. At the same time, overseas Irish communities helped later migrants. Connections among relatives and neighbors could offer a route into a new place and make subsequent journeys more feasible. The combination of family separation and community support helped turn emergency departures into continuing chain migration.

Higgins’s 2023 speech discusses effects on Irish language and rural culture, particularly because rural districts with high Irish-speaking populations were heavily affected. The material cited here does not include a separate language census source, so it cannot establish a precise measure of language loss. The point is best understood as an attributed observation about uneven regional and cultural effects, rather than a quantified result.
What do the surviving records tell us—and what is missing?
Famine history depends on different kinds of evidence that answer different questions. Relief correspondence can document local appeals and administrative actions; passenger records can trace arrivals recorded at a particular port; newspaper notices can capture efforts to reconnect families; and later census figures can provide broader demographic measures. None should be treated as a complete record of every affected person.
The National Archives of Ireland’s account of census history notes that the 1851 census included detailed emigration data and records on disease and disability. Most of the 1841 and 1851 census returns were destroyed in the 1922 Public Record Office fire, however, and only fragments survive. That loss limits direct household-level reconstruction from those returns. A surviving record may be informative precisely because it preserves a detail, but it cannot fill every gap left by the destroyed material.
For a documentary or local-history inquiry, the most reliable approach is to keep each source’s scope visible: note who created it, what place or population it covers, and whether it records a request, an arrival, a departure or an estimate. The National Archives of Ireland’s history of Irish census records explains the surviving census material, while its guide to famine records describes the relief papers.

Why did the famine have such a long legacy?
The famine’s consequences did not end with the worst years of crop failure. Death, continuing departures and family separation altered communities in Ireland, while the growth of Irish populations abroad created networks that could sustain further migration. A person who left might become a point of contact for a relative or neighbor considering the same journey. In this way, the famine accelerated an emigration pattern that continued beyond the crisis itself.
Its legacy is also difficult to reduce to one number. “About one million emigrants during the immediate famine period,” 1.5 million permanent departures from 1845 to 1855, and 1.3 million overseas emigrants from 1841 to 1850 describe different measures. The dates and definitions belong with each figure. Together, the evidence points to a profound demographic rupture, while the surviving records leave important limits on how precisely individual lives and household histories can be reconstructed.
