Check the specific screening’s arrival, late-entry, Q&A, and accessibility details before you go. Policies differ by festival and venue: some stop seating once a screening begins, while others admit late arrivals only if space permits. Plan extra time for any introduction or post-film discussion, and follow the venue’s rules once you are inside.

A useful rule is to treat the film listing, ticket instructions, and venue access page as separate pieces of the plan. The listing can tell you what is scheduled for that film; the ticket page may explain admission and seating; and the venue page may cover equipment or physical access. If any detail matters to your visit and is unclear, confirm it with the festival or venue before you travel.

How early should I get to a documentary film screening?

Use the arrival and ticket instructions for your particular event rather than assuming there is a standard arrival window. Lines, ticket checks, and seating arrangements vary. Tribeca, for example, says lines form approximately one hour before a screening and that loading begins 30 minutes before the scheduled start; those timings describe Tribeca’s arrangements, not a general rule for film screenings. Tribeca Festival FAQ

Arriving with time to spare gives you a better chance to find the correct entrance, collect or scan your ticket, and settle in before the film starts. Check whether your ticket is for reserved seating or general admission: Tribeca says most of its screenings use general admission rather than reserved seating. CPH:DOX warns that late ticket holders may lose their seat. CPH:DOX FAQ Tribeca Festival FAQ

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Those details affect how much time to allow. With general admission, arriving before loading gives you time to join the appropriate line and follow staff instructions; with a reserved seat, check whether the venue still expects you to arrive by a stated time. A ticket does not necessarily mean you can arrive at any point and enter without affecting your seat. Follow the event’s own timing rather than using Tribeca’s one-hour line or 30-minute loading window as a rule for another festival.

Can I still enter if I’m late?

Possibly, but do not count on it. Each event sets its own late-entry policy, and the rule may depend on space, when seating ends, or staff discretion. CPH:DOX warns: “If you arrive late for a screening, even one for which you have purchased a ticket, you may risk losing your seat.” CPH:DOX FAQ

Read the ticket and event page for the screening you are attending. If you are delayed, ask venue staff whether entry is still possible; a ticket does not necessarily guarantee entry after the screening has started. Do not assume that a policy at one festival applies to another, or that a late-entry rule will be identical at every venue in the same festival.

If you know you may arrive close to the start, check the late-seating policy before you leave and keep the venue’s official contact information available. Staff make the decision at the venue when a policy allows discretion. If late entry is prohibited once seating ends, arriving after that point may mean missing the screening even if you have a ticket.

How much time should I allow beyond the film’s runtime?

The listed runtime may cover only the film, not the full event. Introductions, stage remarks, and Q&As can add time. Whistler Film Festival explicitly says its running times exclude Q&As and stage speeches. Whistler Film Festival FAQ

Added time varies by event. Edinburgh International Film Festival’s 2025 access guide says most screenings include a short introduction and a Q&A of up to 15 minutes at the end, except where stated otherwise; it also notes that these additions may not be included in the running time. That guidance applies to its 2025 edition and is not a general promise for other festivals or years. Edinburgh International Film Festival 2025 access guide

If you need to leave by a particular time, check the individual screening listing for an introduction, post-film discussion, or other scheduled remarks, then leave a buffer. When an event page does not clarify whether its runtime includes those additions, ask the festival or venue.

Look at the scheduled event as a whole, not just the film’s duration. A short introduction before the film and a discussion after the end credits can change when you will be able to leave. Even if a listing gives a Q&A length, treat it as part of the schedule to verify rather than assuming every screening of the film has the same program. If you have a connection, appointment, or other fixed commitment afterward, allowing extra time is safer than planning to leave at the exact end of the listed runtime.

Will there be a Q&A, and do I need a separate ticket?

A Q&A is not guaranteed at every documentary screening. Check the page for the specific film, since festivals may list discussion details there and schedules can vary between screenings. DOC NYC says most of its in-person screenings have a Q&A after the film, that the film ticket allows the ticket holder to attend, and that Q&A details appear on individual film pages. It advises attendees to remain in their seats after the end credits. DOC NYC FAQ DOC NYC Q&A information

Language can vary too. CPH:DOX says Q&As with non-Danish filmmakers are held in English. Check the listing for the discussion’s language and any access arrangements if those details matter to you. CPH:DOX FAQ

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.

For a specific screening, look for whether a Q&A is actually listed, whether the film ticket includes access to it, and whether the discussion has a stated language. Do not infer that every showing of a documentary includes a conversation just because another screening does. If the listing says a Q&A follows, follow the venue’s instructions after the credits; DOC NYC, for example, asks attendees to remain seated.

How do I find out whether a screening has captions or other access options?

Check both the film listing and the venue’s accessibility information. A film page may identify captions or audio description for that title; the venue page may explain physical access, equipment, and how to request assistance. Availability can vary by film, screening, and location, even within one festival.

  • Captions: Look for a listing that identifies an open-caption screening, caption device, or other captioning option. DOC NYC says not all its venues support captioning technology and not every film has captioning options. DOC NYC accessibility information
  • Audio description: Check whether the particular film and venue support it. DOC NYC notes that audio-description technology is not available at all its venues and that not every film offers the option. DOC NYC accessibility information
  • Assistive listening and seating: Consult the venue’s details. Full Frame describes accessible seating and assistive-listening devices at its venues. Full Frame festival information
  • Interpretation for a Q&A: Check the event’s information and request arrangements in advance if required. DOC NYC offers advance requests for ASL interpretation at in-person Q&As. DOC NYC accessibility information

Festival examples are not guarantees for another event. Sundance’s 2026 access guide describes open-caption screenings, caption devices, and advance requests for some services, while DOC NYC describes some assistive devices as free to borrow through venue staff with identification required. Confirm the current details for your chosen screening, including any request deadline or equipment pickup process. Sundance 2026 accessibility guide DOC NYC accessibility information

If the film and venue pages leave a question unanswered, contact the festival or venue using the current contact details on its official page. Be specific about the screening and the accommodation you need; do not assume that a service offered at one location is available throughout the festival.

It can help to check in this order: first, the individual film page for title-specific captioning or audio-description information; second, the venue’s access page for equipment, seating, and physical access; and third, the festival contact if the two pages do not answer your question. For a Q&A, check separately for interpretation because access arrangements for the film and for a live discussion may be listed in different places.

When a device is available, verify how to obtain it at that venue. DOC NYC says some assistive devices are free to borrow through venue staff and require identification; that is an example of one festival’s process, not a universal requirement. Sundance’s 2026 guide also describes caption devices and advance requests for some services. Check current instructions rather than assuming you can pick up equipment at any screening without arranging it first.

What should I do during the screening?

Silence your phone before the film begins, avoid talking or disruptive device use, and follow posted instructions and staff directions. Do not photograph or record the film unless the event explicitly permits it. Whistler Film Festival’s FAQ tells attendees to silence mobile devices and prohibits cameras and recording devices in festival theatres; rules can differ elsewhere, so check the venue’s policy. Whistler Film Festival FAQ

Keep the venue’s directions in mind throughout the event, including any instructions about entering, seating, or staying for a post-film discussion. If you are unsure whether a device or recording is allowed, ask staff instead of assuming that a rule from a different cinema applies.

Quick checklist before you leave

  • Confirm the venue, entrance, ticket instructions, and whether seating is reserved.
  • Check the event’s arrival and late-entry rules.
  • Look up the film’s runtime and whether an introduction or Q&A is scheduled.
  • Check the Q&A language, ticket access, and any interpretation arrangements.
  • Verify captions, audio description, assistive listening, seating, and any equipment or advance-request steps for your specific screening.
  • Silence your phone and keep cameras and recording devices put away unless venue staff say otherwise.

Festival and venue policies can change, so use the current official information for the screening you are attending. A listing from a previous year, another location, or a different showing may not describe the arrangements for your event.

Frequently Asked Questions

How early can I arrive at my screening?

Check the specific festival’s ticket and arrival instructions. Tribeca says its lines form approximately one hour before showtime and loading begins 30 minutes before the scheduled start, but those are Tribeca arrangements, not a universal arrival window. If the screening is general admission, allow time to join the line and follow staff instructions.

What happens if I’m late to a screening?

It depends on the venue. Tribeca admits late arrivals only if space is available, Whistler says late seating is at staff discretion and may stop after a stated point, and Full Frame says it has no late seating once seating concludes. CPH:DOX warns that a late ticket holder may risk losing their seat. Check your event’s current policy; a ticket does not guarantee entry after the film begins.

Does the film’s listed runtime include a Q&A?

Not necessarily. Whistler says its running times exclude Q&As and stage speeches. Edinburgh International Film Festival’s 2025 access guide also notes that introductions and Q&As may not be included in the listed runtime. Check the individual screening page and leave extra time if you have a commitment afterward.

Do I need a separate ticket for a post-film Q&A?

Check the individual film listing and the festival’s ticket policy. DOC NYC says most of its in-person screenings have a Q&A, that the film ticket allows the ticket holder to attend, and that details appear on each film page. This may not be the policy at other festivals, and a Q&A is not guaranteed at every screening.

How can I confirm that a film has captions?

Check the film page for that specific screening and the venue’s accessibility page for available technology. Captioning may be an open-caption screening or provided through a device, and availability can vary by film and location. If the official pages are unclear, contact the festival or venue directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I request access support for a Q&A?

Check the event’s access information and contact the festival or venue using its current official contact details. DOC NYC offers advance requests for ASL interpretation at in-person Q&As, but arrangements and request procedures vary. Confirm them for your screening rather than assuming an option is available throughout the festival.

Can I take photos or record during a documentary screening?

Follow posted venue rules and staff directions. Whistler Film Festival prohibits cameras and recording devices in its festival theatres and asks attendees to silence mobile devices. Unless the event explicitly permits recording, keep cameras and recording devices put away.

The Bottom Line

Before you go, check the specific screening’s ticket and arrival rules, whether late entry is allowed, whether a Q&A is scheduled, and what access options the film and venue actually provide. Leave time beyond the listed runtime, follow staff instructions, and confirm anything unclear with the festival or venue using its current official information.
